Lost Your Keys on a Farm or Building Site?

4 min read By Mobile Auto Locksmith Hamilton

Rural and site callouts have their own problems — finding you, ground conditions, and vehicles that were never near a sealed road. How to make it go smoothly.

Keys lost in a paddock, down a bank, or somewhere in a half-built house are among the more common rural jobs we attend across the Waikato. The work is the same as anywhere; getting to you is the part that needs a bit of planning.

Finding you

Location is everything. A rural address alone often will not find a vehicle parked at the far end of a property, and building sites frequently have no number on them at all. A dropped pin from your phone is the single most useful thing you can send. Failing that, describe the gate, the road it is off, and roughly how far in.

If there are several gates, say which one and whether it is locked. Waiting at a locked gate while the person with the key is three paddocks away is the most common way these jobs lose half an hour.

Ground conditions

A van loaded with equipment is a road vehicle, and after a wet week a paddock track that a ute handles easily is not something we can safely drive. If the vehicle can be brought to firmer ground, that helps. If not, tell us and we will bring what we need on foot.

This is worth being straightforward about on the phone. We would rather walk in from the road knowingly than get a loaded van stuck and turn one problem into two.

Ownership on a work vehicle

Farm utes and site vehicles are often registered to a business or a trust, which is fine — but ownership still gets checked, so knowing who it is registered to saves time.

If the vehicle is registered to a company and you are not a director, a call to whoever is normally settles it. Worth arranging before we arrive rather than while we stand there. The reasoning behind the check is in proof of ownership.

The job itself

Usually an all-keys-lost, since a spare rarely exists for a work vehicle. We generate and cut a key from the vehicle and program it on site, then delete the lost key so whoever finds it in the grass cannot start the machine. That is described on our lost car keys page.

Deletion matters more on a farm than most places. A key lost in a paddock is a key that may surface months later, and a work vehicle is a valuable thing to leave startable by whoever picks it up.

Doing the rest of the fleet

If you run several vehicles, this is the moment to think about spares for the rest. It is far cheaper done deliberately than one emergency at a time — see fleet locksmith services.

The country we cover

Rural callouts take us out past Ohaupo, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Matamata and up toward Huntly and Ngaruawahia most weeks.

Distances are real and we quote travel honestly rather than discovering it halfway there.

The same visit can usually cover several vehicles, which spreads the travel across the lot rather than paying it each time. Ask for a quote with the vehicles listed.

Common questions

How do I tell you where I am if there is no address?

Send a dropped pin from your phone. It is faster and more reliable than any description, and it puts us at the vehicle rather than the front gate.

Can you reach a vehicle in a paddock?

Often, depending on ground conditions. After heavy rain we may need the vehicle brought to firmer ground, or we will walk in with the equipment. Tell us the situation when you call.

The ute is registered to the farm company. Is that a problem?

No, it is very common. We just need someone authorised by the business present, or confirmation from them. Mention it on the phone.

Can you delete the lost key?

On most modern vehicles, yes, and for a key lost outdoors it is worth doing. It means the key nobody can find will not start the machine if it turns up.
