Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to the questions we hear most.
If your question is not here, call us — we would rather explain it properly than have you guess or worry.
How fast can you get to me in Hamilton?
Most Hamilton callouts are reached in 20 to 40 minutes. Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Ngaruawahia are typically under an hour depending on traffic and time of day. You will get a real ETA when you call — not a vague estimate.
Is there a car locksmith near me in Hamilton?
Yes. Mobile Auto Locksmith Hamilton is a mobile car locksmith that comes to you anywhere in Hamilton and the wider Waikato, 8am to 6pm, seven days. Keys are cut and programmed at your vehicle, so there is no tow to a dealer.
How much does a car key replacement cost?
It depends on the key type, and then on the make, model and year. Plain metal keys are $10–$20. Transponder keys with an immobiliser chip are $120–$180. Smart and proximity keys are $280–$600, depending on the make, model and year. If every key is lost, it is $250–$550, because every vehicle is different. Where yours lands inside those ranges depends on the car — we give you a fixed price before starting any work, and it does not change on your driveway.
Can you make a car key if I have lost every key?
Yes. All-keys-lost jobs are our speciality. We generate a new key from your vehicle identification number or by reading the immobiliser directly, cut the blade on site and program it to your car — usually inside an hour. It typically costs $250–$550, and the lost keys can be deleted so they never start the car again.
Can a locksmith program a smart key?
Yes. We supply and program smart, proximity and push-button start keys at your vehicle using dealer-level diagnostic equipment, typically $280–$600. The one common exception is Mercedes-Benz with FBS4, roughly 2015 onwards, which only a franchise dealer can program.
What is immobiliser programming?
Immobiliser programming registers a key chip with your car so the engine will start. It is usually done through the OBD port; where the port will not accept a new key, we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly (EEPROM). Lost or stolen keys can be deleted at the same time.
Can you delete keys that were lost or stolen?
Yes, on most modern makes. We can erase old key codes from the immobiliser, so a lost or stolen key is permanently locked out of your vehicle.
Do you work at night or on weekends?
We work 8am to 6pm, seven days — weekends included, but not at night. If you ring outside those hours, leave a message and we will come to you first thing.
Will programming a new key damage my car?
No. We use manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment that communicates with your vehicle the same way a dealership tool does. No drilling, no cut wiring, no forced entry.
Do you service trucks, vans and motorcycles?
Yes. We cover light and heavy commercial vehicles, tradie vans, courier vehicles, farm utes, motorcycles and scooters throughout the Waikato.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, EFTPOS, card (Visa, Mastercard), bank transfer, and Afterpay on jobs of $50 or more. We also accept WINZ quotes and invoice approved fleet and business accounts. Payment is due on completion.
Is a spare key cheaper than replacing a lost key?
Yes, considerably. A spare cut while you still have a working key is a quick, affordable job. An all-keys-lost job costs substantially more — avoid it with a spare key today.
Do you service the whole Waikato region?
We are based in Hamilton and cover Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Ngaruawahia, Huntly, Tokoroa, Matamata, Raglan and surrounding areas. Rural callouts beyond these areas are available by arrangement.
Are you insured and experienced?
Yes. We are fully insured and owner-operated, with over 12 years of hands-on experience, and we use professional-grade key cutting and programming equipment.
Can you replace all keys if I have lost every single one?
Yes. All-keys-lost recovery is one of our most common jobs. We generate and program new keys directly from your vehicle without needing the old key. Old key codes are erased so lost keys can never start your car again.
Can you unlock my vehicle without causing damage?
Yes. We use professional non-destructive entry tools that open vehicle doors without scratching paintwork, damaging seals, or harming any part of the vehicle. No broken glass, no forced locks.
Can you repair ignitions instead of replacing them?
Often yes. Many ignitions can be repaired and re-keyed to your existing key, which costs significantly less than a full replacement. We assess each job on the spot and give you the most cost-effective solution.
Do you service European vehicles like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi?
Yes. We carry specialist software and key blanks for European brands including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Volvo, Peugeot, Renault, and Fiat. European smart keys can be more complex but we handle them regularly.
Can you provide quotes for WINZ (Work and Income)?
Yes. We can provide a formal written quote for WINZ approval before starting work. Call us to discuss your situation and we will prepare the documentation you need.
Do you travel outside Hamilton to places like Te Awamutu or Morrinsville?
Yes. We regularly travel to Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Ngaruawahia, Huntly, Tokoroa, Matamata, Raglan, and surrounding Waikato towns.
