What Does a Car Key Replacement Cost in Hamilton?
A straight answer on car key replacement cost in Hamilton, what makes one vehicle dearer than another, and why the dealer quote is usually the highest number you will hear.
It is the first question almost everybody asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on your vehicle rather than on us. What we can do is explain exactly what drives the number, so the price you are quoted makes sense instead of feeling arbitrary.
Three things decide it. The first is the type of key. A plain metal key for an older vehicle is the cheapest thing we cut. A transponder key, with a chip in the head that talks to the immobiliser, costs more because it has to be programmed as well as cut. A proximity or push-to-start smart key is dearer again, because the blank itself is expensive and the programming is more involved. As a guide, our FAQ page sets out the ranges we usually work within.
The second is whether you still have a working key. Cutting a spare while you have an original is quick, and the price reflects that. An all-keys-lost job is a different piece of work: the key has to be generated from the vehicle itself, which takes longer and needs more equipment. If you have one key left, getting a spare now is the cheapest this job will ever be — that is the whole argument in why a spare car key saves money.
The third is the make. European vehicles with encrypted immobiliser systems take longer than a common Japanese model, and some require specific software. That is not a surcharge for the badge; it is genuinely more work.
What we will not do is quote a range and then revise it on your driveway. Tell us the make, model, year and registration on the phone and you get a fixed price before we travel. If it turns out to be a different key type than expected, we say so before starting and you decide.
For comparison, a franchise dealer will usually want the vehicle brought to them, will order the key in, and will quote workshop labour on top. That is why the dealer figure tends to be the highest number people are given, and why they are often surprised at the difference. You can ask us for a price with your vehicle details and compare for yourself.
Common questions
Can you tell me the price over the phone?
Yes. With the make, model, year and registration we can identify the key type and give you a fixed, all-inclusive price before we travel. That price is confirmed before any work begins.
Why is a smart key so much more than a normal key?
The blank itself costs considerably more, and the programming sequence is longer and needs professional diagnostic equipment. You are paying for the component and the coding, not just the cutting.
Is a locksmith always cheaper than the dealer?
Not always, but usually — and the bigger difference is often time. We come to the vehicle and finish the same day, where a dealer typically needs the car brought in and the part ordered.
Do you charge a callout fee on top?
No. The price you are quoted includes coming to you anywhere in Hamilton. Travel beyond about 30km from the city may carry an additional charge, and we tell you that on the phone.
