Common Types of Broken Car Key Damage

Car key damage takes many forms. Understanding what type of damage you have helps us bring the right equipment:

  • Cracked or split key head — the plastic casing housing the transponder chip has broken. The blade may still work but the key is fragile and risks losing the chip.
  • Snapped blade — the metal key blade has broken, usually from metal fatigue after years of use. If part of the blade is still in the lock, see also our Broken Key Extraction service.
  • Worn blade — the blade profile has worn down to the point where it no longer reliably operates the lock or ignition.
  • Worn flip-key mechanism — the spring or pivot holding a flip key's blade has broken, leaving the blade dangling or missing.
  • Corroded or dirty key — corrosion or grit inside the key housing causing the transponder to fail intermittently.

Can a Broken Key Be Repaired, or Does It Need Replacing?

This depends on the damage. We always assess first and give you options.

In some cases, particularly cracked cases or damaged flip-key pivots, we can rebuild the key using a new housing with the original blade and chip. This is cheaper than a full replacement because no new programming is required — the chip is already coded to your vehicle.

In other cases — broken blades, severely worn key shanks, or failed transponder chips — a full replacement is more appropriate. We will always tell you which option makes more sense before any work begins.

The Repair or Replacement Process

We start by examining the key and the lock or ignition (where accessible) to understand the full extent of the problem. If the blade is snapped, we check whether any fragment remains in the lock — this needs to be extracted before a new key can be used.

If repair is viable, we fit the old chip into a new housing or rebuild the flip mechanism. If replacement is needed, we program a new key to the vehicle and cut a blade. In either case, we test fully before we leave.

Real Job Example: Split Flip Key on a Mazda CX-5

A customer in Te Rapa called us after the plastic housing on her 2017 Mazda CX-5 flip key split in two. The blade and transponder chip were both intact but the two halves of the key were held together with sellotape.

We arrived, examined the chip and blade, confirmed both were undamaged, and fitted them into a new CX-5 flip-key housing. No reprogramming was needed because the chip was original. The repair took 20 minutes and cost her less than a quarter of a full key replacement. She drove away with a solid, properly cased key.

When to Call About a Broken Car Key

Call us as soon as you notice key damage — do not wait until the key fails completely. If the blade is cracked, a repair now is far cheaper than an emergency replacement after it snaps off in the ignition. If the case is cracked and the chip is exposed, the chip can be damaged by moisture or physical impact.

If the key has already broken off inside the lock or ignition, stop trying to use the lock — call us first. Our Broken Key Extraction service addresses that specific scenario.

Common questions

Broken Car Key Repair: what customers ask

Can you fix a broken car key without replacing the whole thing?

Often yes — if the transponder chip is intact, we can move it into a new housing and save you the cost of reprogramming. We assess the damage first and give you repair vs replacement options.

How much does broken car key repair cost in Hamilton?

Repair using the original chip is usually $80–$150. Full key replacement (new key plus programming) is $200–$500 depending on vehicle type. We quote before we begin.

What if the blade is snapped in the ignition?

That is a broken key extraction job. We carry the right tools to remove snapped blades from locks and ignitions without damage. Call us and we will send the right tools.

My car key case is cracked but it still works — should I bother fixing it?

Yes. A cracked case exposes the transponder chip to moisture and physical damage. A chip repair now costs far less than a full replacement when the chip fails. We can often fix the housing in 20 minutes.

Do you repair flip keys?

Yes. Flip-key pivot springs and worn flip mechanisms are repaired regularly. If the blade and chip are intact, a housing or mechanism repair is much cheaper than a new key.

How long does a car key repair take?

Housing repairs and flip-key rebuilds typically take 20–40 minutes. Full replacements take 45–75 minutes. All done at your location.
