Quick answers

  • Can you replace a lost ute canopy key? In most cases, yes. The right fix depends on the lock: cutting a key from a code, replacing the lock, or changing the lock to a new key. We tell you which before we travel.
  • Can you copy a roof rack key? Yes, if you still have a working key that can be cut. Some makes only supply keys by code from the maker, and we will tell you early if yours is one of them.
  • A key has snapped in the lock. We remove the broken piece first, then cut a new key or replace the lock if it is worn.
  • Do I need to bring the vehicle in? No. We come to your ute or van at home, on the worksite or in your yard.
  • What does it cost? It depends on the lock and how many you have. You get a firm price by phone before we travel.

Ute canopy keys: lost, broken, damaged or spare

A ute canopy usually has its own lock or locks: a rear door or hatch lock, and sometimes side doors or windows. On many utes these locks are separate from the ignition key, so losing the canopy key does not stop the ute starting, but it can lock your gear in or out. Some factory tailgates do use the vehicle key, so check which lock is which before you call.

Problem What usually works What to tell us
Lost canopy key, no spare Cut a new key if the lock has a code, or replace the lock, or change it to a new key Canopy make, a photo of the lock, and any code number on the lock
Spare or extra key wanted Cut a duplicate from your working key A photo of the key, or the key itself
Key snapped in the lock Remove the broken piece, then cut a new key or replace the lock How much of the key is still in the lock
Damaged, stiff or worn lock Free the lock up, or replace the lock barrel Whether the key turns at all
Several canopies or vehicles Match the locks so one key opens them all, where the locks allow it How many vehicles, and the make of each canopy

Factory canopies, aftermarket canopies, and tonneau or tub covers with keyed locks are all worth a call. If you are not sure what you have, send a photo of the lock and we will tell you what we can do before we travel.

Roof rack keys: lost, broken, damaged or spare

Roof bars and racks, ladder racks, cargo boxes and bike carriers often lock on with their own keyed locks. When the key goes missing, the rack stays locked on the roof and you cannot fit it, move it or take it off. Common rack and box makes include Thule, Whispbar, Yakima and Rhino-Rack. Whatever the make, the first step is the same: look at the lock and any code number.

Many racks come with a key code stamped on the key or the lock. With a code, a replacement key can often be cut or ordered. Some makes only supply keys by code from the maker, and we will say so straight away rather than guess. If there is no key and no code, the lock can often be replaced or changed to a new key.

Problem What usually works What to tell us
Lost roof rack key Cut by code if you have one. Otherwise replace the locks or change them to a new key Rack make, a photo of a lock, any code number
Spare key wanted Cut a duplicate from your working key A photo of the key, or the key itself
Key broken in the lock Remove the broken piece, then cut a new key or replace the lock How the key broke
Damaged or corroded lock Free the lock up, or replace it A photo of the lock, and how old the rack is

How the job works

  1. Call for a quote or send a quote request with your vehicle make, model and year, and a photo of the lock.
  2. We tell you which fix suits your lock: a copy, a key cut by code, a new lock, or the lock changed to a new key. You get a firm price by phone before we travel.
  3. We come to your ute or van, at home, on the worksite or in your yard.
  4. We make the key or fix the lock, then test every lock and key on site.
  5. If you want, we cut extra keys while we are there, so you are not caught out again.

Which utes we work on

Canopy and roof rack locks belong to the canopy or the rack, so the work is much the same whichever ute it sits on. For the ute's own key, each model below has its own page.

Vans, SUVs and trade vehicles with roof racks

Tradies fit racks for ladders, pipe and long loads, and cargo boxes for tools. A lost rack key can stop a job. We work on vans, wagons and SUVs as well as utes.

Fleet and business vehicles

If you look after several utes or vans, one visit can sort the rack and canopy locks on all of them. Ask us about matching locks so one key suits the fleet, a spare key for every vehicle, and a simple record of which key belongs to which vehicle. See Fleet Locksmith Services and Commercial Fleet Keys. We invoice approved fleet and business accounts, so ask when you call.

What to have ready when you call

  • The vehicle make, model, year and rego
  • What the lock is on: canopy door, roof rack foot, cargo box, tonneau or tub cover
  • A photo of the lock and of any key you still have, including any number stamped on it
  • Whether any key is left, or none at all
  • Where the vehicle is parked

Lost, broken or spare: which is easiest?

A spare cut from a working key is the simplest job. A lost key with no code takes more work, because the lock may need replacing or changing to a new key. If you have one working key now, getting a spare cut is the best protection against the next lost key.

Common questions

Ute Canopy & Roof Rack Keys: what customers ask

Can you make a new ute canopy key if I have lost it?

In most cases, yes. We cut a key from the lock code, replace the lock or change it to a new key. We confirm which before we travel.

Can you copy a roof rack key?

Yes, if you still have a working key that can be cut. Some makes only supply keys by code from the maker, so we will tell you early.

What if the key broke off in the canopy or roof rack lock?

We remove the broken piece first. Then we cut a new key, or replace the lock if it is damaged.

Do you come to me to fix a canopy or roof rack lock?

Yes. We come to your ute or van at home, on site or in your yard anywhere in Hamilton and the Waikato.

Is the canopy key the same as my ute key?

Usually not. Canopy and rack locks normally have their own keys, though some factory tailgates use the vehicle key.

Which utes do you cover?

Utes sold in New Zealand, including the Hilux, Ranger, D-Max, Triton, Navara, Colorado, Amarok, T60, Cannon and Pik-Up. Each model page covers the vehicle's own key.

Can you also make the ute's own ignition key?

Yes, for most utes sold in New Zealand. See the model page for yours, or ring us with the make, model and year.

Can you match the locks across several vehicles?

Where the locks allow it, yes. Ask us about matching canopy and rack locks so one key suits your fleet.

How much does a canopy or roof rack key cost?

It depends on the lock type and how many locks you have. You get a firm price by phone before we travel.

How do I find my key code?

Look for a number stamped on the key or near the lock, and send us a photo. With no code we can still look at replacing the lock.

Yes. We invoice approved fleet and business accounts. Ask us when you call.

What are your hours?

8am to 6pm, seven days.
