Vehicle capability
Which cars we can program, and how.
The security system decides the job, not just the badge. This table shows the systems we work on at your vehicle, the programming route, and where the work has to go to a dealer.
| Make | Security system | How a new key is programmed | All keys lost at your car |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW and Mini | CAS2, CAS3, CAS3+, CAS4, CAS4+, FEM, BDC | OBD on CAS cars; FEM and BDC module read on the bench in the van | Yes |
| Audi, Volkswagen, Škoda | Immobiliser 4 and 5, MQB (about 2013 onwards) | OBD on older cars; MQB data from the instrument cluster or comfort module | Yes |
| Land Rover and Range Rover | Older JLR immobiliser (before 2015), KVM (2015 onwards) | At the module | Yes, a longer job on KVM |
| Volvo | CEM, semi-smart and keyless systems | At the module | Yes |
| Ford | PATS, several generations | OBD or direct module read, depending on generation | Yes |
| Nissan | NATS through the BCM, intelligent key | PIN retrieved, then OBD | Yes |
| Mercedes-Benz | FBS3 (up to about 2014) | Handled in full | Yes |
| Mercedes-Benz | FBS4 (about 2015 onwards) | Dealer only, closed to all independent locksmiths | No, ring with the rego and we will confirm |
| Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Subaru, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Kia and most other makes | Transponder, remote and smart key systems | OBD, or EEPROM read where OBD will not accept a key | Yes |
| Japanese imports | Same systems, different remote frequency | Remote matched to the import (often 312–315MHz, NZ-new is 433MHz) | Yes |

Common questions
Which car brands can you make keys for?
All of them, in practice. Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Suzuki, Isuzu, Holden, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Volvo, Mini, Land Rover, Range Rover, Jeep, Peugeot, Renault, Fiat, LDV, MG, BYD, GWM, SsangYong and more. Each brand has its own page setting out the key systems it uses.
Is there any vehicle you cannot do?
One. Mercedes-Benz on the FBS4 system, roughly 2015 and newer, is closed to every independent locksmith in the world — only the franchise network can write a key to it. Mercedes on the earlier FBS3 system, broadly up to 2014, we handle in full. Ring with the registration and we will tell you which yours is before you pay anything.
Do you work on Japanese imports?
Yes, and they are a large part of the Waikato fleet. A Japanese-domestic vehicle often does not share the key system of the NZ-new version of the same model. Remote frequency is the usual difference: NZ-new vehicles run at 433MHz while Japanese-domestic models commonly sit around 312 to 315MHz, so an online remote bought for the wrong market will not work even when the key looks identical.
Can you make a key for a European car without going to the dealer?
Usually yes. BMW and Mini CAS and FEM/BDC systems, Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda Immobiliser 4, 5 and MQB, Land Rover and Range Rover KVM, and Volvo CEM are all within our capability. MQB and FEM/BDC all-keys-lost jobs take longer than a spare because the data comes off a module rather than the OBD port, and we price them accordingly.
