BYD Car Key Replacement in Hamilton
BYD has arrived in Hamilton with a splash — the Atto 3 is now a familiar sight across Hamilton suburbs, and the Seal and Dolphin are rapidly gaining ground as practical EV choices in the Waikato. BYD's electric vehicles use sophisticated smart key systems developed for the Chinese EV market, which means they require specific diagnostic tools and software that a general automotive locksmith may not carry.
We program BYD smart keys for the current NZ range. If your Atto 3 is sitting in the driveway with a flat fob or you have lost the only key to your Seal, we can help — we come to the vehicle and sort it on site.
- All-keys-lost BYD key recovery
- Spare keys cut and coded on site
- Damage-free vehicle lockout entry
- Old keys erased from the immobiliser
- Dealer-level diagnostic equipment
- Fixed price quoted before we travel
“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”
BYD Key Systems — EV Smart Key Technology
BYD's current NZ range uses a proximity smart key system across all models — the Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, and Sealion all use a push-button start fob that must be paired with the vehicle via OBD diagnostic access. The EV platform integrates the key with the vehicle's power management system, which adds a step not present on conventional ICE vehicles.
BYD Atto 3: The most common BYD in Hamilton. The Atto 3 uses a CR2032-powered proximity fob. When the battery dies, the vehicle will not respond to keyless approach. BYD includes a physical key blade concealed in the fob for emergency entry — but push-start will not function until the fob is re-paired.
BYD Seal and Dolphin: These newer BYD models use the same proximity key architecture as the Atto 3. All-keys-lost recovery requires OBD access to the vehicle's BCM and specific BYD security credentials. We carry tooling for current NZ BYD models and confirm coverage before travelling.
BYD key fob battery: All current BYD fobs use CR2032 cells. A flat battery is the most common BYD key callout we receive. Battery replacement is straightforward but must be followed by a re-pair procedure if the fob has de-paired.
Common BYD Key Problems in Hamilton
Atto 3 fob not detecting: The most common BYD callout. A flat CR2032 battery or a fob de-paired after an incorrect battery change — the car simply will not respond to the proximity key. We carry the correct batteries and re-pair on site.
All-keys-lost BYD: Losing every key to an EV is stressful. BYD all-keys-lost recovery uses OBD access and brand-specific programming — we confirm coverage for your specific model before travelling so there are no wasted journeys.
BYD physical key override: When the fob battery is completely dead, the physical blade concealed inside the BYD fob unlocks the door but does not start the car. Knowing this saves you from calling a tow truck — but you still need us to replace the fob battery and re-pair.
BYD charging and key integration: On some BYD EV variants, a key programming issue can occasionally affect charging session management. We diagnose these EV-specific fob issues and advise on the correct fix.

Mobile BYD Key Service vs. Dealership
BYD's dealer network in New Zealand is still expanding — which means the nearest BYD-trained technician may not be as close as you would like. A dealer key replacement involves booking a service appointment, waiting for parts, and typically costs $450–$850 for a current smart key.
We come to your BYD, anywhere in Hamilton or the Waikato. The job is done at your location — driveway, car park, or roadside. For most BYD smart key battery and re-pair jobs, the total cost is a fraction of the dealer alternative.
All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most BYD models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost BYD does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a BYD key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Used imports and NZ-new BYD models are not always the same job
Not every BYD on Waikato roads was sold new here. Vehicles that arrived used from another market can carry a different immobiliser generation and a different key blank from the NZ-new version of the same model and year, even when the two look identical.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway: vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run at 433MHz, while cars built for other markets often sit elsewhere on the band. A remote bought online for the wrong market will not talk to the car even when the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
