Mercedes-Benz Car Key Replacement in Hamilton
Mercedes-Benz key and security systems are among the most complex in common use — and replacing a Mercedes key is not something a standard diagnostic tool can do. The KESSY system on modern Mercedes vehicles, the EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch) on older models, and Mercedes' proprietary security protocol all require specialist equipment.
We carry Mercedes-compatible programming tools and have programmed keys for C-Class, E-Class, GLE, GLC, A-Class, Sprinter and other models across Hamilton and the Waikato. If you are stranded with a Mercedes that has no working key, we come to you.
- All-keys-lost Mercedes-Benz key recovery
- Spare keys cut and coded on site
- Damage-free vehicle lockout entry
- Old keys erased from the immobiliser
- Dealer-level diagnostic equipment

“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”
Mercedes Key Systems — EIS, KESSY and Beyond
EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch, older Mercedes): The EIS module controls key recognition on W203 C-Class, W211 E-Class, ML W163/W164 and similar models. Programming a replacement key on an EIS-equipped Mercedes requires coding a new key to the EIS and ensuring the EIS remains properly synchronised with the ECU and transmission control unit. This is sensitive work — the EIS on some older Mercedes models is notoriously fragile.
KESSY (Keyless Go, 2007–present Mercedes): KESSY is Mercedes' proximity entry and push-button start system. The smart key communicates with multiple antennas around the vehicle body. Programming a new KESSY key requires Mercedes-level diagnostic access to the EZS (Electronic Ignition Lock) module and the vehicle's security seed. We cover KESSY programming for most NZ-market Mercedes models.
NTG-based infotainment integration: On current-generation Mercedes (W213 E-Class, W205 C-Class, GLE, GLC), the key system is integrated with the vehicle's multimedia platform in ways that require a correctly sequenced programming process. We work through these correctly — there is no shortcut.
Mercedes Sprinter van keys: The Sprinter commercial van uses a separate key platform from the passenger car range. We cover Sprinter key programming — both older 906-generation and current 907-generation models.
Common Mercedes Key Problems in Hamilton
KESSY key not detected: The Mercedes pushes a small LED indicator when the key is placed in the start well — if the LED does not activate, the key is not being detected. Most common cause: flat key battery (specific to your MB variant — CR2025 or CR2032). We carry both. If battery replacement does not fix it, the key may need re-pairing.
EIS faults on older Mercedes: Older W203 and W211 models develop EIS faults where the key turns but the vehicle does not respond correctly — sometimes an intermittent fault, sometimes a complete failure. We diagnose EIS-related faults and advise honestly on whether the EIS module itself needs attention.
Mercedes key fob wear and damage: Mercedes smart key fobs — particularly the flip-key design used on many W204 and W212 models — develop hinge failure and button wear. We rebuild these where the circuit board is undamaged.
Sprinter van lockouts: Mercedes Sprinter vans in Hamilton's trades and courier sector get locked out regularly. Non-destructive entry for Sprinter cargo vans is standard procedure.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Mercedes-Benz models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Mercedes-Benz does not need towing to a dealer.
Where we stop on a Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes changed its key security part-way through the 2010s, and the change matters more than the model or the mileage. Cars on the earlier FBS3 system — broadly up to 2014 — we handle in full: keys cut and programmed, all-keys-lost recovered, old keys deleted, at your vehicle.
From FBS4 onward, roughly 2015 and newer, the system is closed to everyone outside the franchise network. No independent locksmith can write a key to an FBS4 car, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. If yours is FBS4 you need Mercedes themselves.
Ring us with the registration and we will tell you which system your car uses before you have paid us anything. We would rather say so on the phone than send someone out to give you the same answer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Mercedes-Benz key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Used imports and NZ-new Mercedes-Benz models are not always the same job
Not every Mercedes-Benz on Waikato roads was sold new here. Vehicles that arrived used from another market can carry a different immobiliser generation and a different key blank from the NZ-new version of the same model and year, even when the two look identical.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway: vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run at 433MHz, while cars built for other markets often sit elsewhere on the band. A remote bought online for the wrong market will not talk to the car even when the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.

How much does a Mercedes key replacement cost in Hamilton?
EIS key (older C/E-Class): $380–$580. KESSY smart key: $550–$950. Sprinter van key: $320–$550. We quote exactly with your model, year and chassis letters.
Can you fix Mercedes Sprinter van key problems?
Yes. Sprinter 906 and 907 key programming and lockouts covered. Fleet rates for commercial operators.
How long does Mercedes key programming take?
EIS key: 50–70 minutes. KESSY smart key: 60–80 minutes. All-keys-lost on current generation: 75–100 minutes.
Do you program Mercedes keys in all Hamilton suburbs and the Waikato?
Yes. All Hamilton locations and Waikato towns. For complex models we may want the VIN before committing.
Can you repair a Mercedes flip key with a broken hinge?
Yes. Mercedes flip key hinges and button pads replaced on site. We bring common MB fob components.
Is Mercedes key programming more expensive than other brands?
Generally yes — the complexity of KESSY and EIS systems and the cost of the key blanks mean Mercedes work costs more. We are always significantly cheaper than the dealer, and we come to you.
