Mercedes GLA Key Systems — Why the Year Matters More Than Usual

Early X156 GLA (2014, FBS3 build window): A small number of the earliest GLAs sold in NZ were built before Mercedes' FBS4 rollout. These run the older FBS3 immobiliser, which we program in full — OBD key programming, all-keys-lost recovery, and deleting lost keys from the system.

X156 GLA from the FBS4 changeover (2015 onward): The great majority of GLAs on Waikato roads run FBS4. This system authorises every key through Mercedes' own servers in Germany with two-way encryption — there is no independent-locksmith workaround, and no consumer-level tool bridges that gap. For these vehicles, Mercedes themselves is genuinely the only option.

How we tell the difference: The build date, not the sales year, decides which system is fitted. We ask for the registration and VIN over the phone and check before quoting — it costs you nothing to find out, and saves a wasted callout either way.

What This Means If You Drive a GLA

If your GLA is one of the early FBS3 builds, treat it like any other Mercedes we service — spare key cutting, all-keys-lost recovery, and lost-key deletion are all on the table, done at your vehicle.

How do I know if my GLA is FBS3 or FBS4?
