Mercedes A-Class Key Systems by Generation

A-Class W168 (1997–2004): Basic EIS transponder key — affordable and straightforward to replace. Common as a second-hand premium hatchback in Hamilton. FBS3 — we cover this in full.

A-Class W169 (2004–2012): Updated EIS system with remote central locking. The W169 is a popular compact hatchback still widely used across Waikato. FBS3 — we cover this in full.

A-Class W176 (2012–2018): Only the earliest W176 builds, before the FBS4 changeover around 2015, run the older FBS3 system we can program. Most W176 A-Class vehicles on the road run FBS4. We confirm your build date by VIN before quoting — the model year alone is not a reliable guide.

A-Class W177 (2018–present): Every W177 A-Class runs FBS4, Mercedes' closed, server-authorised key system. This is dealer-only — no independent locksmith can write a key to it.

Common A-Class Key Problems in Hamilton

Early W176 (pre-FBS4) all-keys-lost: The same OBD recovery approach works on the small number of W176 builds that still run FBS3. We confirm by VIN before starting.
