Transponder Key Programming in Hamilton

A transponder chip (the word comes from "transmitter responder") is a passive radio frequency device embedded in the plastic head of your car key. When you insert the key and turn it, an antenna ring around the ignition barrel sends a small electromagnetic field that powers the chip. The chip responds with a unique code. The immobiliser control unit checks that code against its stored list of authorised keys. If the code matches, the immobiliser allows the engine to start. If there is no match — including when a key has no chip at all, or has not been programmed — the car will crank but not fire, or will cut out after a second or two.

This is why a hardware-only key cut from a blank at a locksmith or hardware store will turn in the ignition but will not start the car. The physical blade opens the barrel, but the missing or unregistered chip means the immobiliser stays active.

You need transponder programming whenever a new key has been cut and needs to be activated in your vehicle's system. This covers: lost car key replacement where a new key has been sourced; adding a spare key to a vehicle that currently has only one key; replacing a key where the transponder chip has failed (the key turns but the car will not start); and situations where the key's programme has been lost due to a module replacement or system reset.

Some second-hand vehicles come with keys that were programmed to a previous vehicle and never re-programmed to the current one — these keys may fit the barrel but will not start the car. We can re-program them correctly.

For most vehicles, this is a 20–45 minute procedure. We then test the key: insert, turn, and confirm the engine starts and runs normally. We also check that the physical blade turns the barrel smoothly and does not bind. If we are programming a second key at the same time, we test both before leaving.

Some older vehicles — pre-2000 models with simpler transponder systems — can be programmed using a self-service sequence without diagnostic equipment. We use the appropriate method for your specific vehicle.
