Gate Remote Programming in Hamilton

Automatic sliding and swing gates are controlled by a gate controller — a box mounted near the gate motor that manages open and close signals, safety sensor inputs, and power. Remotes communicate with a receiver connected to the controller, typically using 433MHz or 868MHz radio frequency with either fixed code or rolling code encryption.

Fixed code systems are older and simpler — the remote always sends the same signal. Rolling code systems advance the code on each press, making them more secure against signal copying. Clicker-style universal remotes can often replicate fixed code systems, but rolling code systems require a remote that is either OEM or specifically compatible with the encryption protocol.

Keypad entry systems work differently — they communicate with the gate controller via a wired or wireless connection and trigger the gate open signal when the correct PIN is entered. Most keypads allow multiple PINs to be stored, which is useful for properties with multiple residents, farm workers, or regular delivery personnel.

Lost remote: If you have lost the only remote for your gate, or your last working remote has failed, and you need to restore access quickly — particularly if the gate is stuck closed and blocking vehicle access to your property.

New remote needed: You need additional remotes for family members, farm workers, regular contractors, or rental tenants. Adding remotes to most systems is straightforward once you know the pairing procedure.

Remote de-programmed: Rolling code remotes can fall out of sync if the button is pressed many times while out of range of the receiver, or if the controller's memory was cleared (often after a power fault or lightning strike).

Moving into a new property: If you have moved into a property with an existing automatic gate and the previous owners did not leave a working remote — a situation more common than you would expect — we can often add a new remote to the system or clear the memory and re-program from scratch.

Keypad code change: Rural properties with multiple workers often need keypad codes changed when staff leave. We can update keypad access codes and delete old PINs on most controllers.

A Matamata dairy farmer contacted us after his automatic gate remote stopped working following a lightning strike that had tripped the property's RCD. The gate controller had rebooted and cleared its memory — both remotes were no longer paired.

We travelled to the property (approximately 55 minutes from Hamilton), identified the gate system as a Nice ROBUS 600 sliding gate motor, located the controller's programming mode button inside the motor housing, and re-paired both remotes in sequence. We also checked the controller's obstruction sensor wiring while there — the lightning surge had melted a connector on the sensor cable, which we replaced with a weatherproof connector to prevent the gate from triggering false stops.

Many automatic gate installations include a keypad mounted on a post near the gate — useful for visitors, deliveries, or tradespeople who need access when you are not home.

We can add and delete PIN codes on most common keypad models. Adding a PIN typically involves entering a master code to put the keypad into programming mode, then entering the new PIN and confirming it. Deleting a PIN varies by brand — some keypads allow individual PIN deletion; others require a full memory clear and re-entry of all remaining PINs.

For rural properties with a high staff turnover, maintaining keypad access codes is an ongoing requirement. We can also advise on keypad systems that allow smartphone-managed access codes — a more practical solution for properties with frequently changing authorised users.

A few points worth knowing:

Fixed code remotes are a security risk. If your gate system is more than 15 years old, it likely uses fixed code technology. Anyone with a code scanner can capture and replay your gate signal. If security is a concern, a rolling code upgrade is worth discussing with a gate installer.

Clearing the controller memory removes ALL remotes. If we need to do a full factory reset on the controller, all previously paired remotes are de-programmed. Bring all your remotes to the re-programming session.

Lost remotes should be de-programmed. A lost remote is a potential security issue — anyone who finds it can access your property. If you have lost a remote, ask us about a full memory clear and re-program to ensure the old remote can no longer open the gate.
