Lock Installation in Hamilton

We install the full range of residential and light commercial lock hardware used in New Zealand:

Deadbolts: Single and double cylinder deadbolts from Gainsborough, Lockwood, Vivid, Yale, and Mul-T-Lock. Deadbolts are the primary security lock on most NZ front doors — they engage a bolt that cannot be retracted without a key, unlike a spring latch which can be shimmed open. We recommend a Grade 1 deadbolt with a minimum 25mm bolt throw on every external door.

Lever entry sets: Combination handle and latch, with optional dead-locking. Common on front and back doors as the primary entry hardware. We supply and fit sets that match the door's existing backset and bore hole dimensions.

Rim cylinders: The familiar Yale-profile cylinder used in surface-mounted night latches. Common on older Hamilton homes and rental properties. We install and re-key these to NZ cylinder profile standards.

Window locks: Sash stops, dual-action catches, and keyed window locks for sash, casement, and sliding windows. In Hamilton's housing stock, ground-floor window security is frequently inadequate — an unlocked sliding window is the most common point of entry in residential burglaries.

Sliding door locks: Patio bolts and dedicated sliding door locks with anti-lift security plates. Standard slider latches are not adequate security — they can be lifted off the track with minimal effort.

Padlocks and hasps: Commercial-grade closed-shackle padlocks for sheds, gates, and storage areas.

Most lock installations in Hamilton homes are straightforward. The process is:

2. Select hardware appropriate for the door and security requirement. We bring a range of stock hardware in the van and can advise on the right product for your situation.

3. Remove the old hardware if replacing — handle, lock cylinder, strike plate.

4. Install the new hardware with the correct screw lengths into solid timber or steel reinforced framing. This point matters: a deadbolt installed with short screws into soft timber framing is not secure regardless of the lock's quality.

5. Fit and adjust the strike plate for correct bolt engagement and alignment.

6. Test operation through the full key range — inside and outside, with the door open and closed.

For doors where the existing prep does not match the new hardware, we carry out the necessary boring or chiselling on site. We confirm this requirement before quoting and include it in the price.

If you have just moved into a Hamilton property, the first security priority is not new hardware — it is knowing who has keys to the existing hardware. Re-keying the existing cylinders costs significantly less than replacing the locks and makes every existing key useless immediately.

After re-keying, consider the hardware itself. The things we most commonly see on established Hamilton homes that create real security risk:

Back and side doors with only a spring latch. A spring latch has no security function — it holds the door closed but cannot resist forced entry. Adding a deadbolt to a back door is one of the highest-value security improvements a homeowner can make.

Window locks. Most older NZ windows have no keyed lock — just a standard sash or sliding catch that anyone with a screwdriver can defeat in seconds. Fitting $30–$60 of window security hardware on ground-floor windows takes 20 minutes and makes a meaningful difference.

Sliding door anti-lift. Most sliding doors can be lifted off their track with upward pressure. An anti-lift plate prevents this and costs very little.

A couple who had just purchased a home in Rototuna called us after moving in. The previous owners had provided three keys — but they had no idea how many had been cut over the years and whether the neighbours, the real estate agent, or previous contractors still had copies.

We re-keyed both the front door deadbolt and the back door lever set to a new profile, and took a look at the overall security while there. We found:
• The front door deadbolt was a quality Lockwood unit in good condition — just needed re-keying
• The back door had no deadbolt, only a lever set with a spring latch
• Two ground-floor windows had no keyed locks

We re-keyed the two cylinders, installed a Gainsborough single-cylinder deadbolt on the back door, and fitted sash stops on the two ground-floor windows. Cut four keys for the new profile.

Total time: one hour 40 minutes. That job came to $380. A quote for full lock replacement would have been $650–$850.
