Key Fob Repair in Hamilton

A key fob that no longer responds reliably is one of the most common calls we receive. Before you spend hundreds of dollars on a replacement, give us a call — in many cases a key fob can be repaired rather than replaced, saving you significant money. Mobile Auto Locksmith Hamilton carries the parts and tools to fix cracked casings, worn buttons, failed batteries, and corroded circuit boards at your vehicle. Plenty of people ring us asking about a car remote rather than a key fob — same thing, same repair. We fix remotes wherever we can, and do car key remote replacement when one is beyond repair.

Common Key Fob Problems and What Causes Them

Key fobs take a lot of punishment — dropped on hard floors, exposed to weather, rattled around in bags and pockets for years. The most common faults we see are:

  • Dead or weak battery — by far the most common issue. Always try a fresh CR2032 (or the correct battery for your model) before calling anyone.
  • Worn or unresponsive buttons — the rubber button pads compress and lose contact with the circuit board over time. Replaceable.
  • Cracked casing — physical damage allows moisture and grit inside, which eventually damages the circuit board.
  • Corroded contacts — moisture inside a cracked case causes oxidation on the battery contacts or circuit board traces.
  • Lost or broken flip blade — the flip mechanism or blade has detached from the housing.
  • Failed transponder chip — less common, but the chip inside can fail, usually from impact damage.

Repair vs Replacement — When Each Makes Sense

Repair makes sense when the transponder chip and circuit board are intact. In these cases, we fit a new casing, new button pads, or clean corroded contacts — the key is reassembled with the original working electronics. No reprogramming is needed because the chip has not changed.

Replacement makes sense when the circuit board is damaged, the transponder chip has failed, or the fob is so old that the electronics are no longer reliable. We will be honest with you — if repair is not the right answer, we will tell you and quote for a replacement.

Battery Replacement — Start Here

Before anything else, replace the battery. Most key fobs use a CR2032 coin cell — they are available from any supermarket or service station for around $5. The battery cover is usually on the back of the fob (press with a coin and twist, or use a small flathead screwdriver to pry open).

If a new battery does not restore full function, the problem is inside the fob. Call us at that point.

Real Job Example: Key Fob Repair for a 2019 Hyundai Tucson

A customer in Dinsdale called us about his 2019 Hyundai Tucson key fob. Two of the four buttons had stopped responding completely and the casing had a crack along one edge from a concrete floor drop six months earlier.

We examined the fob and found the button pad had lost contact in two positions and moisture had reached one area of the circuit board. We replaced the button pad, cleaned the board with isopropyl alcohol, and fitted a new casing. The repair took about 30 minutes and the fob was fully functional again — all four buttons responding reliably. The customer had been ready to spend $320 on a replacement. Total repair cost was a fraction of that.

When Fob Repair Is Not Enough

Sometimes the circuit board is too far gone. Corrosion, severe impact damage, or a failed chip means the fob cannot be reliably restored. In these cases, we supply a quality aftermarket replacement fob and program it to the vehicle on site. We will always give you both options — repair price and replacement price — so you can make an informed decision.

Common questions

Key Fob Repair: what customers ask

Do you do key fob replacement if my fob cannot be repaired?

Yes. When a fob is beyond repair we supply a replacement key fob and program it to your car on site. A replacement remote key is typically $120–$250, depending on the car, what it needs and part availability.

How much does key fob repair cost in Hamilton?

Repairing a remote is $49.90–$120, depending on what is wrong. Soldering broken buttons sits at the lower end, and a new rechargeable battery, as in many BMW keys, at the upper end. Circuit board cleaning is included. If the remote is beyond repair, a replacement remote supplied and programmed is $120–$250, depending on the car and the availability of that remote.

Why are only some of my fob buttons not working?

The rubber button pad on the affected buttons has worn or delaminated, losing contact with the circuit board. This is a repair job, not a replacement — usually quick and cost-effective.

Can you fix a fob that got wet?

Sometimes. If the fob was wet briefly and the contacts are lightly corroded, a thorough clean with isopropyl alcohol can restore function. Significant water damage or corrosion may have permanently affected the circuit board — we assess on site.

My fob works but only from very close range — what is wrong?

This suggests a weak battery or a weakened transmitter circuit. Start with a fresh battery. If range is still poor, the transmitter may need attention — call us.

Can you replace just the casing on my key fob?

Yes, if your existing blade, chip, and circuit board are intact. We carry cases for many popular vehicles. Fitting a new casing takes 20–30 minutes.

Do you repair fobs for Toyota, Mazda, Ford, BMW, and other brands?

Yes. We repair fobs for all common New Zealand vehicle brands. Call with your make and model and we will confirm whether we can help before travelling.
