Mercedes GLE Locksmith Hamilton

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is the current name for what was, until 2015, badged the ML-Class — same W166 underpinnings, different name on the back. That naming change happens to line up almost exactly with Mercedes' switch from the independently-programmable FBS3 system to the closed FBS4 system, which makes the badge on your vehicle a genuinely useful first clue to what we can do for you.

“Lost the only key to my Hilux on a Friday afternoon. New key cut and programmed in my driveway by Saturday morning — and it cost half what the dealer quoted. Will absolutely call again.”

ML-Class (pre-2015, FBS3) vs GLE (2015 onward, FBS4)

ML-Class W166 (2011–2015): Sold under the ML-Class name, these run the older FBS3 immobiliser. We program keys for these in full — standard key and remote programming, all-keys-lost recovery, and deleting lost keys from the system, all done at your vehicle.

GLE-badged W166/C292 (2015 onward): When Mercedes renamed the range to GLE in 2015, it coincided with the move to FBS4. These vehicles authorise keys through Mercedes' own encrypted server system, which is closed to independent locksmiths worldwide. If your vehicle wears the GLE badge, it is almost certainly FBS4 — we will confirm by VIN before quoting anything.

What To Do Next

If your vehicle is badged ML-Class, call us — this is normal Mercedes work we handle regularly. If it is badged GLE, call us anyway: we will check the VIN and tell you honestly whether it is one of the rare border-line builds or confirm you need Mercedes NZ directly. Either way, the phone call costs nothing and saves a wasted trip.

Frequently asked

Mercedes-Benz key questions

Do you service the Mercedes ML-Class?

Yes. Pre-2015 ML-Class vehicles run the older FBS3 system, which we program in full, including all-keys-lost recovery.

Do you service the Mercedes GLE?

GLE-badged vehicles (2015 onward) run FBS4, which is dealer-only. We will confirm by VIN over the phone, but in almost every case a GLE needs the Mercedes dealer network.

How much does ML-Class key replacement cost?

Roughly $420–$680 for a standard key or remote, more for all-keys-lost — confirmed exactly once we have your VIN.

My GLE is FBS4 — can you do anything?

We can usually still help with non-immobiliser issues like a damaged key shell or a mechanical lock problem. For anything that needs a new key authorised to the car, Mercedes themselves is the only option on FBS4.
