Toyota Car Key Replacement in Hamilton
Toyota is the most common vehicle on Waikato roads by a wide margin. That means more Toyota key callouts than any other brand — and after 12 years of owner-operated locksmith work in Hamilton, we know Toyota's key and immobiliser systems inside out.
Whether your Hilux lost its only key on a Cambridge job site, your Prius smart fob stopped detecting in the Chartwell car park, or your Corolla's ignition barrel has started sticking on cold mornings, we come to the vehicle and sort it on the spot. No tow, no dealer wait list, no guesswork.

“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”
Toyota Key Systems — What You Are Working With
Toyota has used several generations of key security since the mid-1990s, and knowing which system is in your vehicle determines how we approach the job.
Standard transponder keys (4D, G and H chip): Found in older Corollas, Camrys, Hiluxes and HiAces — typically pre-2015 models. A chip in the key head talks to a ring aerial around the ignition. The blade must be cut to profile and the chip must be coded to the car. Cutting the blade without coding the chip means a key that turns but never starts the engine.
Smart keys / Proximity keys (Toyota Smart Entry): Most Hilux (2021–present), RAV4, Kia Prius, Aqua, Land Cruiser Prado, Fortuner, and late-model Corolla hatchbacks use push-to-start systems where the fob never leaves your pocket. These are the most expensive keys to replace and require OBD-level immobiliser programming.
H chip all-keys-lost recovery: Toyota's H chip system, used in the Aqua, Prius and several current-model platforms, requires a specialist all-keys-lost process where the dealer pin is read from the vehicle and a new key is coded from scratch. We carry the equipment to do this on site.
HiAce transponder and fleet keys: The HiAce van is a workhorse for Hamilton trades, couriers and small businesses. Most HiAces use standard Toyota transponder systems that we can cut and code at the depot, on the roadside, or wherever the van is parked.
Common Toyota Key Problems We See in Hamilton
Prius and Aqua smart key not detecting: Push-to-start Toyotas sometimes stop detecting the fob inside the cabin. Nine times out of ten this is either a flat fob battery or a fob that has lost its pairing — both fixed on site in under 30 minutes. Occasionally the car's receiver aerial is at fault, but this is uncommon.
Hilux all-keys-lost: A Toyota Hilux with no key at all is one of our most frequent callouts. Recent Hiluxes use an advanced smart key system that requires the pin code to be retrieved from the ECU before a new key can be registered. We carry the Autel and Launch diagnostic tools to do this without a dealer involved.
Corolla and Camry ignition sticking: Older Toyotas with higher mileage develop ignition barrel wear. The wafers inside the barrel flatten out over time and the key takes more force to turn. We repair or replace barrels on site and re-key them to the existing key so you do not need a new key cut.
HiAce key locked inside: We see this constantly in Hamilton's delivery and trades sector. Air wedge and long-reach entry on most HiAces takes under 10 minutes with zero damage.

- Land Cruiser Prado and 200 Series — higher complexity smart key programming; we cover both

Why Mobile Service Beats the Dealership for Key Replacement
Dealerships in Hamilton run on appointment systems. For a key replacement, you are typically looking at two to four days from booking to key-in-hand — and that assumes the blank is in stock. If the blank needs ordering, add another week. Many Toyota smart key blanks are not kept in dealer stock because of the range of variants across model years.
Our mobile service works differently. We stock Toyota transponder and smart key blanks for the most common NZ models — Hilux, Corolla, Aqua, Prius, RAV4, HiAce — and carry the software to code them. Most Toyota key jobs are completed in a single 45–70 minute visit at your location.
Cost comparison is stark. A dealer will typically quote $600–$1,200 for a smart key replacement including programming. Our charge for the same job is materially less — and we come to you rather than requiring you to tow or drive the vehicle to a workshop.
Real Toyota Jobs in the Hamilton Area
2022 Toyota Hilux, Rototuna: Driver lost all keys on a Friday afternoon. The Hilux is a current-generation smart key model. We arrived within 35 minutes, retrieved the pin code from the ECU using our diagnostic tool, programmed a new smart key, and deleted the lost key from the vehicle. The customer had a fully working key in 55 minutes from calling. A dealer quoted $980 and a Monday booking.
2021 Toyota Aqua, Chartwell: Push-to-start stopped working — the fob battery had died and the fob had partially lost its pairing on reboot. We replaced the battery, re-paired the fob, and confirmed the backup key slot was also working. 20 minutes on site. Cost: $85.
2020 Toyota HiAce, Te Rapa: Delivery driver locked keys inside at a warehouse loading dock with a full load aboard and afternoon deliveries pending. Non-destructive entry completed in 8 minutes. No damage, no marks, back on the road before the next delivery window.
2018 Toyota Corolla, Frankton: Ignition barrel sticking badly in cold weather — key needed three attempts to turn. Barrel stripped, worn wafers identified and replaced, re-lubricated and tested. Cost: $160. Dealer had quoted $420 for barrel replacement.
All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Toyota models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Toyota does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Toyota key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Japanese imports and NZ-new Toyota models are not the same job
A large share of what is on Waikato roads came in used from Japan, and a Japanese-domestic Toyota often does not share the key system of the NZ-new version of the same model and year. Different immobiliser generation, different key blank, sometimes a different programming route entirely.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway. Vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run their remotes at 433MHz, while Japanese-domestic models commonly sit around 312 to 315MHz. A remote bought online for the NZ-new model will not talk to a Japanese import even when the key looks identical and the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.

Frequently asked
Toyota car key questions
Can you make a new Toyota key if I have lost every key?
Yes. We carry out all-keys-lost Toyota key recovery for most models including Hilux, Corolla, Aqua, Prius, RAV4 and HiAce. We retrieve the pin from the vehicle, generate a new key, and delete the lost keys from the immobiliser. No towing required.
How much does a Toyota key replacement cost in Hamilton?
Standard transponder key: $180–$280. Smart key (proximity/push-to-start): $350–$600 depending on the model. We quote exactly over the phone with your year and registration — no hidden charges.
Can you program a Toyota smart key without the original?
Yes, for all-keys-lost situations on most Toyota models sold in NZ. We read the pin directly from the vehicle using diagnostic equipment. Some very recent models (2024+) may require an additional step — we advise upfront.
How long does Toyota key programming take?
Transponder key: 30–45 minutes. Smart key all-keys-lost: 55–75 minutes. A spare cut while you already have a working key: 20–30 minutes.
Do you cover Cambridge, Te Awamutu and other Waikato areas for Toyota keys?
Yes. We regularly travel to Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Huntly, Raglan and Matamata.
Can you delete lost Toyota keys from the system?
Yes. Deleting lost keys from the Toyota immobiliser is standard practice on every all-keys-lost job. This permanently prevents the lost key from starting the vehicle.
Can WINZ help with the cost of Toyota key replacement?
In some cases yes — particularly if you have no transport alternative. Ask your case manager and we can provide a formal quote and GST invoice for any WINZ application.
