Toyota Corolla Key Systems by Generation
Older Corolla (ZZE122/ZRE152, 2001–2012): Basic transponder chip key with a separate remote central locking fob. Common, affordable to replace. These Corollas are frequently owned by first-time drivers, and losing the only key is a very common callout.
Corolla (ZRE172/ZRE182, 2012–2019): Transponder key with an integrated remote — one unit for the blade and the locking buttons. Programming via OBD. Still a relatively straightforward job compared to smart key models.
Current Corolla (MZEA12/ZWE211, 2019–present): Higher trim Corollas now use Toyota's proximity smart key with push-button start. These require the full Toyota OBD smart key programming sequence. The Hybrid and Corolla Cross variants are increasingly common in Hamilton.
All-keys-lost Corolla: We attend Corolla all-keys-lost jobs regularly — particularly with older models that had only one key from new or where keys have been lost over a long ownership. Security code extracted from the ECU, new keys generated on site.
Common Toyota Corolla Key Problems
Remote fob battery: The most common Corolla call. A flat battery stops the remote central locking but the key still starts the car — the first sign is having to use the physical key to unlock the door. We replace batteries on site with the correct CR2032 cell.
Worn transponder key: High-mileage Corollas with original keys that are worn to the point where the vehicle starts inconsistently. We cut a new key with a fresh chip registered to the immobiliser.
Locked keys inside: A very common Corolla lockout — the older models with manual locks are occasionally locked with the key in the ignition. Non-destructive entry in most cases under 10 minutes.
Smart key not detecting (newer Corolla): The current Corolla's proximity system can flag a low fob battery before it is completely flat. We carry the correct replacement battery and re-pair if the swap caused a de-sync.

Frequently asked
Toyota key questions
Can you replace a Toyota Corolla key without the original?
Yes. All-keys-lost Corolla recovery is available for most NZ generations. We extract the security code from the ECU directly.
How much does a Corolla key replacement cost in Hamilton?
Older chip key: $120–$200. Transponder remote: $160–$280. Smart key (newer Corolla): $300–$500. Exact price over the phone.
How long does Corolla key programming take?
Basic transponder: 20–30 minutes. Smart key: 35–55 minutes. We advise on timing when you call.
Can you make a spare Corolla key while I still have one working key?
Yes. A spare made from an existing key is fast and affordable — strongly recommended on any vehicle with only one key.
Do you service all Toyota Corolla years?
We cover most NZ-sold Corollas from 2001 onward. Call with your year and variant to confirm.
Can you help if my Corolla remote stopped working after a battery change?
Yes. Corollas can de-sync a remote after a main battery disconnect. We re-pair via OBD at your location.
Do you service the Corolla Cross hybrid?
Yes. The Corolla Cross uses the current Toyota smart key system — fully within our capability.
