The Hilux has gone through several significant key system changes across its generations.

Older Hilux (pre-2012, chassis codes AN10/AN20): These use a basic transponder key — a chipped blade without any remote function. The immobiliser is relatively simple, and replacement keys are among the more affordable Hilux jobs we carry out.

Hilux SR5 and SR (AN120/AN130, 2015–present): This generation introduced push-to-start smart key systems on higher trims, while base models kept a conventional transponder key with a remote. The smart key uses Toyota's rolling-code proximity system — programming requires a genuine Toyota diagnostic sequence via the OBD port.

All-keys-lost Hilux: The most urgent Hilux key call we receive. The procedure reads the immobiliser's security code from the ECU, generates a new key registration, and deletes old keys from the system. It can be done at the ute's location — no towing required in the great majority of cases.

Hilux ignition: The AN120 Hilux ignition barrel is robust but can develop wear after high mileage on working vehicles. Keys that take more force than usual, or that are starting to feel loose in the barrel, are a sign the barrel should be inspected before it fails completely.

Smart key battery failure: The Hilux smart fob battery is a CR2032 cell. When it starts going flat, the proximity system gives intermittent detection failures — the push-button start works one attempt and not the next. We carry the correct batteries and re-pair the fob on site if the battery replacement caused a de-sync.

All keys lost on job site: The single most common Hilux callout. Keys go missing on building sites, in paddocks, at the beach. We attend these all over the Waikato — Rototuna, Te Rapa, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Matamata, Raglan. We generate the new key from the ECU; no original needed.

Spare key cut from existing key: A Hilux with only one key is an accident waiting to happen. We cut and program a second smart key or transponder key while you still have a working original — much cheaper than an emergency all-keys-lost callout.

Broken key blade in ignition: Particularly common on older, higher-mileage AN10/AN20 Hiluxes. We extract broken blades without removing the barrel, then cut a new blade on site.

Remote central locking not working after battery change: A known Hilux quirk — the remote can de-sync when the vehicle's main battery is disconnected. We re-pair it via OBD without replacing anything.

A Hilux owner in Rototuna called us on a Friday afternoon. He had lost both keys to his SR5 push-to-start Hilux — one had been misplaced at a job site weeks earlier, and the second disappeared from his workbench.

We arrived within 35 minutes. Using Toyota's PIN-retrieval sequence via the OBD port, we extracted the security code from the ECU, generated two new smart key registrations, cut and programmed two new keys, and deleted the old lost key codes from the system.
