“Lost the only key to my Hilux on a Friday afternoon. New key cut and programmed in my driveway by Saturday morning — and it cost half what the dealer quoted. Will absolutely call again.”

Toyota Highlander Key Systems

The Highlander has used a proximity smart key system since it arrived in New Zealand, across every trim level. There is no mechanical ignition key — the vehicle is started by a start button once the fob is detected inside the cabin.

Earlier Highlander (sold here as the Kluger until the mid-2010s, then under the Highlander name): Smart key with push-to-start, programmed through the OBD port using Toyota's diagnostic sequence.

Current Highlander (2020 onward): The latest generation carries an updated smart key system with the same general principle — proximity detection, push-button start, and remote-controlled central locking — but requires current-generation programming tooling.

All-keys-lost Highlander: We read the immobiliser or ECU directly to generate a new key registration when no original is available, and delete the lost key's code from the system so it can no longer be used to start the vehicle.

Common Toyota Highlander Key Problems in Hamilton

Smart key battery failure: The most frequent Highlander call. A weak fob battery causes intermittent proximity detection — push-to-start works once, then fails the next attempt. We carry the correct battery and re-pair the fob on site if the swap has caused a de-sync.

All keys lost: A genuinely stressful call for a family SUV, since there is no mechanical backup to start the car. We attend these across Hamilton and the Waikato and generate a new key at the vehicle.

Spare key programming: A Highlander with only one working smart key is a real risk for families. We cut and program a second key while the original is still available, which is considerably cheaper than an emergency all-keys-lost callout.

Locked keys inside with the engine running: An occasional but urgent Highlander call — usually with a child or pet in the back seat. We prioritise these and use non-destructive entry wherever the vehicle allows it.

Real Job Example: 2021 Highlander, Rototuna

A Rototuna family called us after their only working Highlander smart key stopped detecting the vehicle at all — their second key had been lost months earlier and never replaced.

We arrived within 35 minutes and confirmed the fob was not the issue; the key needed full reprogramming. Using the Toyota OBD sequence, we generated a replacement smart key, programmed and tested it through several start cycles, and advised the family to get a genuine spare cut while the working key was still available.

Total time on site: 50 minutes. The dealer had quoted a four-day wait for a replacement part.

Frequently asked

Toyota key questions

Can you program a Toyota Highlander smart key without the original?

Yes. All-keys-lost Highlander recovery is one of our regular jobs. We read the immobiliser data and generate new keys at the vehicle.

How much does a Toyota Highlander key replacement cost in Hamilton?

Smart key programming: $380–$580. All-keys-lost adds $100–$250 on top for the extra diagnostic work. Exact price given over the phone.

Is the old Toyota Kluger the same as the Highlander?

Yes — the Kluger was the earlier New Zealand name for the same model line, later renamed Highlander. See our Toyota Kluger page for details.

How long does Highlander key programming take?

With an existing key: 30–45 minutes. All-keys-lost: 50–70 minutes.

Can you do a 2023 or newer Highlander?

We cover the Highlander up to 2022 model year. For 2023-onward Highlanders, call us with your registration and we'll confirm — these are newer to the market and we're expanding coverage, so ring first rather than assume either way.
