Audi Car Key Replacement in Hamilton

Audi key systems share the Volkswagen Group's MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) architecture — a sophisticated platform that requires dealer-grade diagnostic access for key programming. The same tools that work on a current Volkswagen Golf work on an Audi A3, and the same tools that work on a Skoda Octavia work on an Audi Q5. This means our VW Group diagnostic coverage extends directly to Audi.

We program Audi keys across the A-series and Q-series range for NZ-market models. If your Audi is parked with no working key, we come to you.

  • All-keys-lost Audi key recovery
  • Spare keys cut and coded on site
  • Damage-free vehicle lockout entry

“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”

Audi Key Systems — MQB and MLB Platform

Audi/VW Group MQB platform (A3, A4 B9, Q3, Q5 FY): Current-generation Audi models use the MQB or MLB platform with encrypted key programming that requires ODIS (Offboard Diagnostic Information System) or a compatible third-party tool capable of reading the vehicle's security access codes. Each key is tied to the vehicle's Kessy module via an encrypted rolling code.

Audi advanced key (proximity entry): Standard on most current Audi models — the key fob does not need to leave your pocket for entry or starting. Programming a new advanced key requires the security access code from the Audi central gateway — a process we carry out using our VW Group-compatible diagnostic equipment.

Older Audi models (pre-2015 A4, A6, older Q5): Pre-MQB Audi platforms use ID48 transponder chips in some cases and earlier Kessy protocols in others. These are generally more straightforward to address than current-generation MQB programming.

Audi all-keys-lost: The most complex Audi scenario requires either the security access codes from Audi's records (accessible via dealer) or reading them from the vehicle's gateway module directly. We advise on the specific process for your model when you call.

Common Audi Key Problems in Hamilton

A3 and A4 advanced key not responding: Most common cause is a flat key battery (CR2032 on most current models). If battery replacement does not resolve it, the key may have partially de-paired. We carry batteries and re-pair on site.

Audi Q5 and Q3 all-keys-lost: Medium-size Audi SUVs are among the more frequent luxury brand all-keys-lost callouts in Hamilton. We carry out all-keys-lost Audi recovery for most current-generation Q3 and Q5 models.

Audi key fob wear: Current Audi fobs are well-built but the button pad wears after high daily use. We rebuild Audi fobs with compatible replacement components.

Older Audi A6 ignition wear: Older A6 models with conventional ignitions develop barrel wear — key takes more effort to turn, occasionally gets stuck. We repair Audi ignition barrels on site.

Audi security systems we work on

Immobiliser 4 and Immobiliser 5 on the older cars, and MQB from roughly 2013 across the newer range. MQB is the one dealers use to say it cannot be done independently — it can, but an all-keys-lost needs data pulled from the instrument cluster or the comfort module rather than a straight OBD write, so it takes longer and we quote it accordingly.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy

Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Audi models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.

Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Audi does not need towing to a dealer.

Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car

Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Audi key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.

Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.

Used imports and NZ-new Audi models are not always the same job

Not every Audi on Waikato roads was sold new here. Vehicles that arrived used from another market can carry a different immobiliser generation and a different key blank from the NZ-new version of the same model and year, even when the two look identical.

Remote frequency is the usual giveaway: vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run at 433MHz, while cars built for other markets often sit elsewhere on the band. A remote bought online for the wrong market will not talk to the car even when the blade fits.

This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
