Mazda has used a consistent family of key security systems across their NZ range, with increasing sophistication on more recent models.

G chip transponder keys (older Mazda models): Older Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6 and older BT-50 models use a G chip transponder system that is relatively straightforward to clone or program. The chip communicates with an immobiliser module behind the ignition barrel.

Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry (MAKEY, 2013–present): The CX-5 (from 2012), Mazda3 (2014 onwards), Mazda6, CX-3, CX-8 and current-model Mazda2 use Mazda's push-button start system with a proximity fob. The fob uses rolling-code encryption and must be programmed to the vehicle's specific security seed — it cannot simply be cloned.

All-keys-lost MAKEY recovery: When every key to a MAKEY-equipped Mazda is lost, the procedure involves reading the vehicle's security seed via the OBD port (with manufacturer-specific tool access) and generating a new key code. We carry the diagnostic tools for this procedure for most current Mazda models.

BT-50 transponder and smart key: The BT-50 uses similar key technology to the Ford Ranger platform it is based on (Mazda and Ford co-developed the T6 platform). Transponder and smart key programming procedures are similar to the equivalent Ford process.

CX-5 smart key not detecting: The CX-5 push-button start system sometimes stops detecting the fob. Most common causes: flat fob battery (CR2032, specific orientation required), fob partially de-paired after a battery change, or interference from metal objects next to the fob in a bag or pocket. We diagnose and fix these on site.

Mazda3 and Demio all-keys-lost: Losing the only key to a Mazda3 or Demio is one of the more common all-keys-lost jobs we attend. The MAKEY system requires OBD seed extraction, which we can perform for most models from 2014 onwards.

BT-50 lockouts: The BT-50 ute — popular in Waikato farming, trades and rural property — gets locked out at job sites and rural locations regularly. Non-destructive entry is standard.

Mazda key fob casing wear: Mazda's later fob designs are slim and elegant but susceptible to cracking along the case seam. We rebuild Mazda fobs with replacement casings where the internal circuit board is undamaged.
