Mazda Key Systems — What Makes Them Different
Mazda has used a consistent family of key security systems across their NZ range, with increasing sophistication on more recent models.
G chip transponder keys (older Mazda models): Older Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6 and older BT-50 models use a G chip transponder system that is relatively straightforward to clone or program. The chip communicates with an immobiliser module behind the ignition barrel.
Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry (MAKEY, 2013–present): The CX-5 (from 2012), Mazda3 (2014 onwards), Mazda6, CX-3, CX-8 and current-model Mazda2 use Mazda's push-button start system with a proximity fob. The fob uses rolling-code encryption and must be programmed to the vehicle's specific security seed — it cannot simply be cloned.
All-keys-lost MAKEY recovery: When every key to a MAKEY-equipped Mazda is lost, the procedure involves reading the vehicle's security seed via the OBD port (with manufacturer-specific tool access) and generating a new key code. We carry the diagnostic tools for this procedure for most current Mazda models.
BT-50 transponder and smart key: The BT-50 uses similar key technology to the Ford Ranger platform it is based on (Mazda and Ford co-developed the T6 platform). Transponder and smart key programming procedures are similar to the equivalent Ford process.
Common Mazda Key Problems We See in Hamilton
CX-5 smart key not detecting: The CX-5 push-button start system sometimes stops detecting the fob. Most common causes: flat fob battery (CR2032, specific orientation required), fob partially de-paired after a battery change, or interference from metal objects next to the fob in a bag or pocket. All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Mazda models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Mazda does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Mazda key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Japanese imports and NZ-new Mazda models are not the same job
A large share of what is on Waikato roads came in used from Japan, and a Japanese-domestic Mazda often does not share the key system of the NZ-new version of the same model and year. Different immobiliser generation, different key blank, sometimes a different programming route entirely.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway. Vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run their remotes at 433MHz, while Japanese-domestic models commonly sit around 312 to 315MHz. A remote bought online for the NZ-new model will not talk to a Japanese import even when the key looks identical and the blade fits.
