Hyundai Car Key Replacement in Hamilton
Hyundai has grown from an affordable option to a mainstream first choice across Hamilton and the wider Waikato — the Tucson, Santa Fe and i30 are everywhere. Hyundai's immobiliser and smart key systems are well-designed but not immune to the usual problems: lost keys, worn fobs, lockouts, and the occasional all-keys-lost emergency.
We cut and program Hyundai keys across the full NZ model range using compatible diagnostic equipment. Tucson, Santa Fe, i30, Kona, Ioniq, i20, i10, Sonata, Elantra — we have seen them all and we come to your vehicle wherever it is in Hamilton or the Waikato.
- All-keys-lost Hyundai key recovery
- Spare keys cut and coded on site

“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”
Hyundai Key Systems
Hyundai transponder keys (ID46 chip): Most Hyundai vehicles up to around 2014 use ID46-based transponder systems. The chip in the key communicates with the immobiliser module via a ring aerial on the ignition. Programming requires either a working key or dealer-level diagnostic access.
Hyundai Smart Key (SMART key, BlueLink): Current-generation Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona, Ioniq and i30 models use Hyundai's smart entry system. Push-button start with proximity detection. Programming through OBD diagnostic access is required for replacement or all-keys-lost recovery.
Hyundai Ioniq Electric and Ioniq 5/6: EV-specific smart key systems. We confirm coverage for specific generation before travelling — recent Ioniq 5/6 models are among the newer platforms we are extending coverage to.
i30 and i20 transponder and smart key: The i30 has been one of Hamilton's most popular hatches across multiple generations. Older i30s use standard transponder keys; current models use smart keys. Both are covered.
Common Hyundai Key Problems
Tucson and Santa Fe smart key fob dead: These larger SUVs get high daily use and the fob battery is often the first thing to go. Hyundai fobs use CR2032 or CR2025 cells depending on the variant — we carry both and replace on site. If replacing the battery has not fixed it, re-pairing the fob is the next step.
i30 all-keys-lost: The i30 is one of our more frequent all-keys-lost callouts — popular cars get lost keys. Current-gen i30 smart key programming requires OBD access which we have for these vehicles.
Kona key fob wear: The Kona's compact fob is popular but the button pad wears out with daily use. We rebuild Kona fobs on site.
Hyundai lockouts: Hyundai vehicles with smart entry sometimes lock with the fob inside when the door is pulled shut — the proximity sensor can fail to detect the fob is in the car if it is buried in a bag on the back seat. Non-destructive entry standard.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Hyundai models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Hyundai does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Hyundai key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Used imports and NZ-new Hyundai models are not always the same job
Not every Hyundai on Waikato roads was sold new here. Vehicles that arrived used from another market can carry a different immobiliser generation and a different key blank from the NZ-new version of the same model and year, even when the two look identical.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway: vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run at 433MHz, while cars built for other markets often sit elsewhere on the band. A remote bought online for the wrong market will not talk to the car even when the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
