GWM Car Key Replacement in Hamilton
GWM (Great Wall Motors) has grown significantly in the New Zealand market through the Haval SUV range, and more recently through the Ora electric hatchback and Tank off-road models. The Haval Jolion and H6 are now a common sight in Hamilton driveways, and the Ora has carved a niche as an affordable city EV.
GWM vehicles use smart key systems that require specific programming tools — they are not covered by generic locksmith equipment. We carry the tooling for current NZ GWM models and come to your vehicle wherever it is parked in the Waikato.

“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”
GWM Key Systems — Haval, Ora and Tank
Haval Jolion and H6: These are the most common GWM models in Hamilton. Both use a proximity smart key with push-button start — the fob must be programmed via OBD access to the vehicle's BCM. All-keys-lost recovery for the Jolion and H6 requires a specific GWM programming sequence.
GWM Ora: The Ora is an EV with a smart key system integrated into the vehicle's power management platform. The proximity fob uses a CR2032 battery — when flat, the car will not respond. We carry the correct tooling for Ora key work and confirm coverage before travel.
GWM Tank 300 and 500: The Tank off-road models use a more robust smart key system suited to the vehicle's rugged use case. Key programming follows the same OBD sequence as the Haval models.
Older Haval H2 and H9: These models use transponder key systems on earlier variants and smart keys on later examples. We cover both.
Common GWM Key Problems in Hamilton
Haval Jolion key fob flat: The most common GWM callout. The Jolion's compact proximity fob uses a CR2032 battery. A flat battery means the car will not detect the fob — we carry the correct battery and re-pair on site if needed.
Haval H6 all-keys-lost: Losing every key to an H6 requires OBD diagnostic access for the BCM programming sequence. We perform this for most current NZ H6 models.
GWM Ora EV key issues: Similar to BYD, the Ora's smart key integrates with the EV platform. A flat fob battery can affect charging session management in some variants. We diagnose and advise on the correct fix.
GWM key fob case damage: GWM fob casings are robust but can crack if dropped on hard surfaces. We rebuild fobs with replacement casings where the circuit board is intact.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most GWM models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost GWM does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a GWM key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Used imports and NZ-new GWM models are not always the same job
Not every GWM on Waikato roads was sold new here. Vehicles that arrived used from another market can carry a different immobiliser generation and a different key blank from the NZ-new version of the same model and year, even when the two look identical.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway: vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run at 433MHz, while cars built for other markets often sit elsewhere on the band. A remote bought online for the wrong market will not talk to the car even when the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
