Daihatsu Car Key Replacement in Hamilton

Daihatsu is a familiar name on Waikato roads through two very different routes — the Terios, a compact SUV that had a real following when Daihatsu sold new in New Zealand, and the Mira, Move and Sirion, small and kei-class cars that arrive here almost entirely as Japanese used imports. Daihatsu stopped selling new vehicles in New Zealand some years ago, which means every Daihatsu we see today is either an older NZ-new vehicle or a used import — and the two routes often mean different key systems, even on the same model name.

We cut and program Daihatsu keys at your location across Hamilton and the Waikato — no towing, no workshop wait.

“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”

Daihatsu Key Systems — What You Are Working With

Daihatsu, as a Toyota-group brand, generally follows the same broad transponder-key approach seen across mainstream Japanese vehicles of the same era: older models use a straightforward chipped transponder key that is cut to the lock and coded to the immobiliser separately, while more recent models move toward remote central locking. We do not claim a specific named Daihatsu immobiliser system beyond this — if you are unsure what your vehicle has, call with the registration and we will confirm before quoting.

OBD key programming, EEPROM reading of the immobiliser when OBD will not take a key, all-keys-lost recovery, and deleting lost or stolen keys from the system are all part of a standard Daihatsu callout, the same as on every other brand we service.

Japanese-Import Daihatsu — the Frequency Catch

Most Daihatsu on Waikato roads today — Mira, Move, Sirion and many Terios — arrived as used imports direct from Japan rather than sold new here. This matters for one practical reason: Japanese-domestic remotes commonly run on a different radio frequency (around 312–315MHz) than the 433MHz used on NZ-new vehicles. An off-the-shelf or online remote bought for the "NZ" version of a similarly named model will often look identical but simply will not work on a JDM import. We match the remote to your actual vehicle, not just the model name.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy

Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Daihatsu models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.

Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Daihatsu does not need towing to a dealer.

Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car

Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Daihatsu key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.

Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.

Japanese imports and NZ-new Daihatsu models are not the same job

A large share of what is on Waikato roads came in used from Japan, and a Japanese-domestic Daihatsu often does not share the key system of the NZ-new version of the same model and year. Different immobiliser generation, different key blank, sometimes a different programming route entirely.

Remote frequency is the usual giveaway. Vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run their remotes at 433MHz, while Japanese-domestic models commonly sit around 312 to 315MHz. A remote bought online for the NZ-new model will not talk to a Japanese import even when the key looks identical and the blade fits.

This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.

Frequently asked

Daihatsu car key questions

Do you work on Daihatsu vehicles?

Yes — Terios, Mira, Move, Sirion and other Daihatsu models we see on Waikato roads, whether NZ-new or a Japanese import.

Can you program a Daihatsu key without the original?

In most cases, yes — all-keys-lost recovery works the same way as on other mainstream Japanese brands: we generate a new key from the vehicle rather than needing the original present.

My Daihatsu is a Japanese import — does that change anything?

It can. Imported Daihatsu often run a different remote frequency to the NZ-new equivalent, so we confirm the exact setup on your vehicle before ordering any parts.

Is there a cut-off on how new a Daihatsu you can do?

We currently cover Daihatsu vehicles up to and including the 2022 model year. For anything newer, call with your registration and we will confirm — coverage is expanding as we see more of these vehicles.

Do you cover all of the Waikato for Daihatsu key jobs?

Yes — Hamilton and the surrounding towns, at your vehicle.
