“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”

Mitsubishi Key Systems

Mitsubishi transponder keys (older models): Older Mitsubishi Lancers, ASX (first generation), older Outlanders and older Pajeros use ID46-based transponder systems. These are well within our standard diagnostic capability.

Mitsubishi FAST key (current Outlander, ASX, Eclipse Cross): Current Mitsubishi models use the FAST (Free-Hand Advanced Security Transmission) key system — a proximity key with rolling-code encryption. Programming requires OBD access and the vehicle's immobiliser security seed. In all-keys-lost situations, a specific Mitsubishi programming sequence is required.

Mitsubishi Triton (MQ and MR): The current Triton MR uses a smart key system with push-button start. This is one of our more common Mitsubishi callouts — Triton owners in the Waikato trades and rural sector are among our busiest Mitsubishi customers.

Mitsubishi Pajero: The Pajero uses different key technology across generations — older Pajeros use transponder keys; later models use smart keys. We cover both.

Eclipse Cross: The Eclipse Cross uses the current FAST key system. Programming follows the same sequence as the Outlander.

Common Mitsubishi Key Problems in Hamilton

Triton all-keys-lost at job sites: The Triton is our most common Mitsubishi all-keys-lost callout. Rural and trades use means keys sometimes get lost on site. Current Triton MR smart key all-keys-lost recovery requires the OBD FAST key sequence — we carry the compatible tools.

Outlander and Eclipse Cross smart key battery: Mitsubishi FAST key fobs use CR2032 cells. When the battery dies, the vehicle cannot detect the fob. We carry the correct batteries and re-pair if the change caused a de-pairing.

Older Lancer ignition wear: High-mileage Mitsubishi Lancers — still a common sight on Hamilton's roads — develop ignition wear. The key becomes difficult to turn or sticks on removal. We repair Lancer ignition barrels on site where possible.

Mitsubishi ASX key fob repair: First-generation ASX key fobs with rubber button pads wear out with daily use. We rebuild these on site — cheaper than sourcing a replacement fob from a dealer.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy

Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Mitsubishi models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.

Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Mitsubishi does not need towing to a dealer.

Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car

Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Mitsubishi key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.

Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.

Japanese imports and NZ-new Mitsubishi models are not the same job

A large share of what is on Waikato roads came in used from Japan, and a Japanese-domestic Mitsubishi often does not share the key system of the NZ-new version of the same model and year. Different immobiliser generation, different key blank, sometimes a different programming route entirely.

Remote frequency is the usual giveaway. Vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run their remotes at 433MHz, while Japanese-domestic models commonly sit around 312 to 315MHz. A remote bought online for the NZ-new model will not talk to a Japanese import even when the key looks identical and the blade fits.

This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
