Older Outlanders typically use a conventional transponder key, often paired with a separate remote for central locking — a straightforward, affordable job when a replacement is needed. From around the mid-2010s, higher grades (and most PHEV variants) moved to a smart/proximity key with push-button start, and this became standard across most trims as the range went on.

The plug-in hybrid drivetrain on PHEV models is a completely separate system from the key and immobiliser, so it has no bearing on how we approach the job. We program a key or fob to match what the vehicle's system expects via the OBD port, testing the full lock, unlock and start sequence before finishing. If every key has gone missing, we can generate a new one directly from the vehicle — no original required.

Smart key fob battery flat: A dying coin-cell battery on push-button models causes intermittent start detection. We carry the correct battery and re-pair the fob if needed.

All keys lost: Our most common current Outlander callout. We attend these across Hamilton and the Waikato and generate a new key directly from the vehicle, removing any lost key from the immobiliser.

Only one key on a used import or second-hand buy: Common at the second or third owner. We cut and program a spare from the working original.

Stolen key: We delete the stolen key from the immobiliser and issue fresh keys so it can no longer start the vehicle.

A Flagstaff family called us after their Outlander's only smart key stopped being detected reliably — the push-button start worked occasionally and then not at all.

We arrived within 35 minutes, confirmed the fob battery was the cause, fitted a fresh battery, and re-paired the fob to the vehicle's immobiliser to clear the fault. We also cut and programmed a second smart key while we were there, so the family now has a proper spare.

Total time on site: 50 minutes. Problem fixed and a spare key provided in the same visit, at a fraction of a dealer's quoted turnaround.
