Lexus Car Key Replacement in Hamilton
Lexus key technology shares its foundation with Toyota's platform — the same H-chip and smart key architecture used across the Toyota range, developed to a higher specification for the Lexus premium segment. This means our Toyota-compatible diagnostic toolset covers the Lexus range for most programming and replacement tasks.
We program Lexus smart keys and transponder keys across the full NZ range. RX, NX, IS, ES, CT, UX, GS — if it is a Lexus sold in New Zealand, we can almost certainly help you on site without towing to a dealership.
- All-keys-lost Lexus key recovery
- Spare keys cut and coded on site
- Damage-free vehicle lockout entry
- Old keys erased from the immobiliser
- Dealer-level diagnostic equipment
- Fixed price quoted before we travel
“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”
Lexus Key Systems — Smart Key and Transponder
Lexus Smart Key System: Lexus uses a proximity smart key system across most NZ models — the 2.4GHz rolling-code fob allows hands-free entry and push-button start. The fob must be programmed to the vehicle using Toyota/Lexus diagnostic protocol via the OBD port. In all-keys-lost situations, the dealer pin must be obtained or the immobiliser security access read from the ECU.
Lexus H-chip (SMART key with Advanced Security): Current-generation Lexus models use the H-chip — a higher-specification version of Toyota's standard smart key chip. This provides enhanced security compared to older G-chip or ID67 Toyota systems. The programming process is similar but requires Lexus-specific seed data.
Older Lexus transponder keys (IS220d, IS250 pre-2013, older RX300/350): Older Lexus IS and RX models use G-chip transponder keys. These are more straightforward to address and generally take less time than current smart key models.
Lexus NX and RX plug-in hybrid keys: The NX450h+ and RX450h models add a hybrid-specific proximity key that interacts with the vehicle's power management system. Programming follows the same Toyota/Lexus protocol with the addition of hybrid system confirmation steps.
Common Lexus Key Problems in Hamilton
RX and NX smart key not detecting: The Lexus RX is the most common Lexus callout in Hamilton — a popular SUV with high ownership across Hamilton's professional suburbs. Smart key detection issues are almost always a flat fob battery or a de-paired fob after a battery change. We carry the correct batteries and re-pair on site.
IS and ES smart key replacement: These business and professional saloons are common in Hamilton's CBD and professional suburbs. All-keys-lost IS or ES recovery uses the Toyota/Lexus OBD sequence — no towing required.
CT hatchback key fob wear: The Lexus CT is a popular fuel-efficient choice in Hamilton. Its compact fob design is well-built but the button pad wears with daily use. We rebuild CT fobs on site.
Older Lexus GS and LS ignition issues: Higher-mileage GS and older LS models occasionally develop ignition issues — we assess on site and advise honestly whether repair or replacement is warranted.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Lexus models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Lexus does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Lexus key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Japanese imports and NZ-new Lexus models are not the same job
A large share of what is on Waikato roads came in used from Japan, and a Japanese-domestic Lexus often does not share the key system of the NZ-new version of the same model and year. Different immobiliser generation, different key blank, sometimes a different programming route entirely.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway. Vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run their remotes at 433MHz, while Japanese-domestic models commonly sit around 312 to 315MHz. A remote bought online for the NZ-new model will not talk to a Japanese import even when the key looks identical and the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
