RX (2009–2015 generation): Proximity smart key with push-button start standard across NZ trims. As with all Lexus models, the RX shares its core engineering with Toyota, and the key system follows a similarly robust, well-proven design.

RX (2015–2022 generation): The following generation carried the smart key system forward with updated security and, on some variants, additional convenience features such as hands-free tailgate activation tied to the key's proximity. Programming is carried out through the vehicle's diagnostic port.

All-keys-lost RX: We read the immobiliser through the OBD port, generate a new key registration, and delete the lost key from the system. Lexus security handshakes can take a little longer than mainstream brands — we give a realistic time estimate on the phone before travelling.

Smart key not detecting: A flat coin-cell battery is the most common cause of intermittent proximity failures on the RX. We carry the correct battery and re-pair the key on site.

Only one key from purchase: Common on second-hand RX purchases — given the cost of a dealer replacement key, we strongly recommend cutting a spare early while the original still works.

All keys lost: A stressful situation on a premium SUV — we generate a new key directly from the vehicle via OBD with no original required, and delete the lost key from the system.

Key fob case wear: Lexus fob casings are well-made but still crack after years of daily handling. We rebuild with a replacement casing where the internal board and chip are intact, avoiding the cost of a full replacement key.

A Hillcrest owner called us after her RX350's only smart key was accidentally left on a windowsill in the rain overnight — by morning, the fob would not unlock or start the vehicle at all.

On inspection, moisture had corroded the fob's internal battery contacts, but the key's chip and transponder were undamaged. We rebuilt the fob with a new casing and contact, re-paired it via the diagnostic port, and confirmed reliable proximity and push-button start across several test cycles.

Total time on site: 50 minutes. The owner avoided a considerably more expensive and time-consuming all-keys-lost job and the dealer wait that would have come with it.
