MG Car Key Replacement in Hamilton
MG's revival as an affordable, tech-forward brand has found real traction in Hamilton. The MG ZS is now a common sight on Hamilton suburban streets, the HS is a popular family SUV, and the MG5 electric hatchback is gaining ground as a practical EV option. MG's modern platform uses smart key technology across the full range — attractive looking fobs with Chinese-platform security systems that require OBD-level programming.
We program MG smart keys for the most common NZ models. ZS, HS, MG5, MG6, RX5 — if your MG has a key problem, we come to you.
- All-keys-lost MG key recovery
- Spare keys cut and coded on site
- Damage-free vehicle lockout entry
- Old keys erased from the immobiliser
- Dealer-level diagnostic equipment
- Fixed price quoted before we travel
“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”
MG Key Systems
MG ZS and ZS EV: The MG ZS uses a smart key with push-button start across all current NZ variants — both petrol and EV. Programming requires OBD access to the vehicle's BCM. The ZS EV has a platform-adapted smart key that includes integration with the EV power management system. We confirm ZS EV coverage before travel.
MG HS: The HS uses the same smart key platform as the ZS with additional antenna points for the larger SUV body. All-keys-lost HS recovery requires the BCM programming sequence via OBD.
MG5 and MG6: The MG5 electric hatchback and MG6 saloon use smart key systems. The MG5 EV key integrates with the charging and power management system — we confirm coverage for your specific MG5 variant before travel.
MG RX5: The older RX5 — now less common as MG has refreshed its lineup — uses a transponder/smart key hybrid system. We have covered RX5 key work and carry appropriate tooling.
Common MG Key Problems in Hamilton
MG ZS smart key not detecting: The ZS is our most common MG callout. Smart key detection issues are almost always a flat CR2032 battery followed by a de-pair event after an incorrect battery change. We carry the correct battery and re-pair on site.
MG HS all-keys-lost: Losing all keys to an HS is a straightforward-but-requires-diagnostic job. OBD BCM access for HS all-keys-lost programming — we perform this for most current NZ HS models.
MG fob case damage: MG's current fob designs are visually attractive but the plastic casing can crack if the fob is dropped. We rebuild fobs with replacement casings where the circuit board is undamaged.
MG ZS EV key and charging integration: On the ZS EV, a fully flat fob can sometimes affect charging session management. We diagnose these fob-related EV issues and advise on the appropriate fix.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most MG models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost MG does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a MG key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Used imports and NZ-new MG models are not always the same job
Not every MG on Waikato roads was sold new here. Vehicles that arrived used from another market can carry a different immobiliser generation and a different key blank from the NZ-new version of the same model and year, even when the two look identical.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway: vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run at 433MHz, while cars built for other markets often sit elsewhere on the band. A remote bought online for the wrong market will not talk to the car even when the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
