Every current MG ZS — petrol and the ZS EV — uses a proximity smart key with push-button start. The fob communicates with the vehicle's immobiliser, and programming a new or spare key is done through the OBD port rather than by cutting a mechanical blade alone.

All-keys-lost ZS: The most urgent MG ZS call we get. We read the security data from the immobiliser, generate a new key registration, cut and program a replacement fob, and delete the lost key's codes from the system so it can never start the car again. In the great majority of cases this is done entirely at your vehicle, with no towing required.

ZS EV: The electric ZS uses the same proximity key approach as the petrol model, with an extra step to confirm the key is correctly recognised by the EV's power management system. We check this as part of every ZS EV job.

Spare keys: A ZS running on a single key is one lost fob away from a stressful morning. Cutting a spare while the original still works is one of the best-value jobs we do — quick, affordable, and done at your driveway.

Fob not detecting: By far our most common ZS callout. Almost always a flat CR2032 battery, sometimes followed by a de-pair event if the battery was changed incorrectly. We carry the correct battery and re-pair the fob on site in under half an hour.

All keys lost: Keys go missing from handbags, between couch cushions, and on job sites. We attend ZS all-keys-lost calls across Hamilton — Rototuna, Te Rapa, Chartwell, Flagstaff — and out to Cambridge and Te Awamutu.

Cracked fob casing: The ZS fob's plastic housing can crack if dropped onto concrete or a driveway. Where the circuit board inside is undamaged, we rebuild the fob with a replacement casing rather than selling you a full new key.

Remote locking stops working after a battery change: Disconnecting the car's main battery can de-sync the ZS key fob. We re-pair it via OBD on site — no new key needed.

We cover the MG ZS up to and including 2023 model year. A Rototuna family called us on a Saturday morning after their MG ZS failed to recognise its only key — the fob had taken a knock a few weeks earlier and had finally stopped working altogether. With no spare key anywhere in the house, the car was stuck on the driveway.
