Suzuki Key Systems
Suzuki transponder keys (older Swift, SX4, Grand Vitara): Older Suzuki models use standard transponder systems — the chip in the key head communicates with an immobiliser ring around the ignition. These use ID46 or ID47 chips depending on the model year and are well within our programming capability.
Suzuki Smart Key (current Swift, Vitara, Baleno, Ignis): Current-generation Suzuki models — the Swift Sport, Vitara Turbo, and recent Baleno — use a push-button start system with a proximity fob. Programming uses OBD diagnostic access and is generally more straightforward than some other smart key systems, though all-keys-lost recovery still requires the correct sequence.
Jimny key system: The Jimny JB74 (current generation) uses a transponder key rather than a smart key — one of the few current vehicles that does. This makes Jimny key replacement more straightforward and often less expensive than a comparable smart key vehicle. We carry Jimny-specific key blanks.
S-Cross and Across: Current S-Cross and Across models use smart key systems. The Across (shared with Toyota RAV4 platform in some markets) has Toyota-adjacent key technology in certain variants — we confirm exact coverage before travelling.
Common Suzuki Key Problems in Hamilton
Swift key fob button wear: The Swift's compact key fob gets heavy daily use — it is a city car that gets locked and unlocked many times per day. The lock/unlock buttons wear out first. We rebuild Swift fobs with replacement button pads on site, which is considerably cheaper than sourcing a full replacement fob.
Vitara smart key not detecting: The Vitara's proximity system occasionally loses the fob signal after a battery change. This is a common and simple fix — a battery replacement followed by a re-pair procedure that we perform on site.
Jimny key blade wear: The Jimny's transponder blade key gets heavy outdoor use — owners who use their Jimnys for what they are designed for put more wear on the key than average. Worn blades cut a new key; worn ignitions can be repaired where possible.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Suzuki models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Suzuki does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Suzuki key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Japanese imports and NZ-new Suzuki models are not the same job
A large share of what is on Waikato roads came in used from Japan, and a Japanese-domestic Suzuki often does not share the key system of the NZ-new version of the same model and year. Different immobiliser generation, different key blank, sometimes a different programming route entirely.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway. Vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run their remotes at 433MHz, while Japanese-domestic models commonly sit around 312 to 315MHz. A remote bought online for the NZ-new model will not talk to a Japanese import even when the key looks identical and the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
