Jimny JB23 (pre-2018): The long-serving previous-generation Jimny uses a straightforward transponder key with a separate remote fob for central locking. Simple, affordable, and one of the easier 4x4 key replacements we carry out — a popular choice as a first key replacement for farm or lifestyle-block vehicles.

Jimny JB64/JB74 (2018–present): The current Jimny introduced a proximity smart key with push-button start across most NZ trims. Programming is carried out through the vehicle's diagnostic port — we read the immobiliser data, register the replacement key, and test proximity detection and start reliability before finishing up.

All-keys-lost Jimny: A common call from rural Waikato properties where a key has gone missing in long grass, a shed, or a paddock. We generate a new key directly from the vehicle via the OBD port and delete the lost key from the system — no towing needed in the great majority of cases, including at remote locations.

Smart key lost on a farm or job site: The single most common JB64/JB74 Jimny callout we get — keys genuinely do get lost in paddocks, sheds, and tall grass. We attend these across rural Waikato including Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Matamata, Morrinsville, Ngaruawahia, and Raglan, and generate a new key from the vehicle with no original required.

Spare key before the only one goes missing: Jimnys used for farm work or off-road trips are frequently down to a single key. We cut and program a second key on site while the original still works — cheaper and far less stressful than an emergency all-keys-lost callout later.

JB23 remote not working: The older-generation remote runs on a standard coin-cell battery that is simple to replace, but a de-synced remote after the battery goes flat needs re-pairing via the diagnostic port, which we do on site.

Mud, dust and water ingress into the key fob: Jimnys that see genuine off-road use can suffer fob damage from moisture and grit. We assess and, where the circuit board is intact, rebuild the fob with a replacement casing rather than charging for a full new key.

A Matamata farm owner called us on a Saturday morning after his only Jimny smart key went missing somewhere between the shed and the back paddock the previous evening — by the time he called, he had given up searching and needed the vehicle back in service.

We travelled out to the property and, working from the vehicle itself via the OBD port, read the immobiliser data, generated a new smart key registration, cut and programmed a replacement key, and deleted the lost key's code from the system so it could no longer start the vehicle if it turned up later.

Total time on site: 50 minutes, including travel to a rural property outside town. The Jimny was back in service the same morning.
