Jaguar Car Key Replacement in Hamilton

Jaguars are a smaller but loyal part of Waikato roads: XF and XE saloons, XJ executive cars, F-Pace SUVs and the occasional F-Type. Most Jaguars from about 2008 on use a smart key, with keyless entry and a push-button start, working with a network of control units in the car. When something goes wrong, such as every key lost, one key lost, or a car that will not recognise its keys after a battery change, the car often cannot be started and should not need a tow.

We come to the car anywhere in Hamilton and the Waikato. Call or message with the year, model and what the dash is showing, and we will tell you what the car needs before we travel. We work 8am to 6pm, seven days.

“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”

Jaguar Key Systems — What You Are Working With

Older Jaguars, from before about 2008, use a conventional transponder key and immobiliser. From about 2008 most Jaguars use a smart key with keyless entry and push-button start. The car decides whether to unlock and start by talking to the key through several control units, including the keyless vehicle module and the body control module.

Jaguar and Land Rover are part of the same group, and both use a keyless vehicle module (KVM) in their keyless systems, so their key problems often look alike. If something upsets the link between those modules and the key, the car can show a message such as Smart key not found or Reposition smart key and press start button, even when the key itself is fine.

Common Jaguar Key Problems in Hamilton

  • All keys lost: there is no working key left, so the car has to be given a new one.
  • Only key lost, or a spare needed: much simpler while one key still works. See spare car keys.
  • Car will not start after a battery change: the car can lose its link with the keys when the battery is disconnected or replaced. See Jaguar XF won't start after a battery change.
  • Smart key not found or not recognised: the car cannot detect a key that is working.
  • A damaged or worn smart key: cracked case, dead buttons or a fob that no longer responds.
  • Locked out of a Jaguar: a key left inside, or a car that will not open.

Jaguar Models We Look After in the Waikato

XF and XE saloons, the XJ, the F-Pace and E-Pace SUVs, the F-Type and the XK are the Jaguars we see. We cover most Jaguar models sold in New Zealand; call with your year and model and we will confirm before you book. Our Jaguar XF page has more on that model.

All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy

Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Jaguar models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.

Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Jaguar does not need towing to a dealer.

Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car

Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Jaguar key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.

Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.

Used imports and NZ-new Jaguar models are not always the same job

Not every Jaguar on Waikato roads was sold new here. Vehicles that arrived used from another market can carry a different immobiliser generation and a different key blank from the NZ-new version of the same model and year, even when the two look identical.

Remote frequency is the usual giveaway: vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run at 433MHz, while cars built for other markets often sit elsewhere on the band. A remote bought online for the wrong market will not talk to the car even when the blade fits.

This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.

Frequently asked

Jaguar car key questions

Can you make a Jaguar key if all keys are lost?

Yes, in most cases. We work at the car, so no tow is needed. Call with the year and model and we confirm first.

Why won't my Jaguar start after a battery change?

After a battery is disconnected or replaced, some Jaguars lose their link with the keys even when the keys and battery are fine. See our Jaguar XF battery change page.

What does smart key not found mean on a Jaguar?

The car cannot detect a key. It can happen with a good key and a fresh key battery, for example after the car battery was disconnected.

Do I need to tow my Jaguar to a dealer?

Usually not. We come to the car anywhere in Hamilton and the Waikato.

Which Jaguar models do you cover?

Most Jaguar models sold in New Zealand, including the XF, XE, XJ, F-Pace and F-Type. Call with the year and model and we confirm.

What do you need to quote a Jaguar key job?

The make, model and year, what the dash shows, and whether you still have a working key. We tell you what the car needs before we travel.
