Range Rover Car Key Replacement in Hamilton
The Range Rover name carries genuine prestige on Waikato roads — the Range Rover Sport is a popular premium SUV across Hamilton's better suburbs, the Evoque is a stylish compact choice, and the Velar has carved a following among Hamilton's design-conscious buyers. Full-size Range Rovers are less common but not unheard of in the Waikato.
Range Rover vehicles share JLR's KVM smart key architecture with Land Rover — the same sophisticated system that makes them secure also requires specialist equipment to service. We program Range Rover smart keys for the current NZ range, coming to your vehicle wherever it is parked.

“Locked my keys in the boot at the supermarket with groceries melting inside. He arrived in 25 minutes, had the car open without a mark on it, and was polite and professional throughout. Highly recommend.”
Range Rover Key Systems — JLR KVM Architecture
Range Rover Sport (L320, L494, L461): The Sport is our most common Range Rover callout in Hamilton. The L494 and L461 generations use JLR's current KVM smart key system — programming requires OBD access with JLR-compatible security tools. The older L320 uses an earlier JLR system that is generally more straightforward.
Range Rover Evoque (L538, L551): The Evoque is a common Hamilton SUV across the Hillcrest, Chartwell, and Rototuna areas. Current Evoque models use the same KVM system as the Sport. The older L538 Evoque uses a slightly different key architecture — both are within our capability.
Range Rover Velar (L560): The Velar uses the current JLR Touch Pro Duo infotainment platform alongside the KVM smart key system. Programming follows the same sequence as other current JLR models.
Full-size Range Rover (L405, L460): The full-size Range Rover uses the highest-specification JLR smart key system. We confirm exact coverage before travel on these models — the L460 in particular has specific tooling requirements.
Common Range Rover Key Problems in Hamilton
Range Rover Sport smart key not detecting: A common callout — the Sport's KVM is sensitive to battery voltage in the fob. A marginal battery will trigger detection failures before the fob is completely flat. We carry the correct CR2032 cells and re-pair if needed.
Evoque all-keys-lost: One of our more frequent JLR all-keys-lost jobs. The Evoque is a popular car for Hamilton professionals — it gets parked at restaurants, gyms, and workplaces, and keys occasionally disappear. KVM all-keys-lost recovery requires OBD security access.
Velar proximity key battery and de-pair: The Velar's fob design is elegant but the battery change can accidentally trigger a de-pair if not done in the correct sequence. We re-pair these on site.
Older Range Rover Sport L320 remote wear: The L320's older flip remote develops button pad and hinge wear. These are rebuilt on site at a fraction of the JLR replacement part cost.

Range Rover security systems we work on
The older Jaguar Land Rover immobiliser on pre-2015 vehicles, and KVM — the Keyless Vehicle Module — from 2015 onward. An all-keys-lost KVM job takes real time at the vehicle, and we quote it as such rather than pretending it is a spare key.
All keys lost — when there is nothing left to copy
Losing every key is a different job from cutting a spare. There is no original to read, so the new key has to be generated from the vehicle itself. On most Range Rover models we do that through the OBD port: the diagnostic tool talks to the immobiliser, authenticates, and writes a brand-new key into the vehicle's memory.
Where a model will not accept a new key over OBD — some older immobiliser boxes and a few later security modules simply refuse — we read the immobiliser or ECU memory directly, recover the key data held in it, and write a new key from that. That is EEPROM work, and it is done in the van at your vehicle rather than sent away. It is slower than an OBD job and priced accordingly, but it means an all-keys-lost Range Rover does not need towing to a dealer.
Deleting a lost or stolen key from the car
Cutting you a new key does not stop the old one working. If a Range Rover key has been lost, stolen, or kept by a previous owner, the car will still start for whoever holds it until that key is removed from the immobiliser's memory.
Ask us to delete it and we de-register the missing key so it no longer starts the vehicle. It costs nothing extra while we are already programming a replacement, and it is the part most people do not think to ask for. Worth doing on any second-hand purchase where the seller could not hand over every key.
Used imports and NZ-new Range Rover models are not always the same job
Not every Range Rover on Waikato roads was sold new here. Vehicles that arrived used from another market can carry a different immobiliser generation and a different key blank from the NZ-new version of the same model and year, even when the two look identical.
Remote frequency is the usual giveaway: vehicles built for New Zealand, Australia and Europe generally run at 433MHz, while cars built for other markets often sit elsewhere on the band. A remote bought online for the wrong market will not talk to the car even when the blade fits.
This is why we ask for the registration before we set off rather than just the make and model — it tells us which build the vehicle actually is, so we bring the right blank and the right equipment the first time.
