Locksmith vs Dealer for Replacement Car Keys
Both can cut and program a car key. The difference is what it costs you in money, time and whether the car has to move at all.
For most cars a mobile locksmith is faster and cheaper than a dealer, cutting and programming the key at your car the same day.
The main exception is a Mercedes-Benz from about 2015 onwards with the FBS4 system, which only a franchise dealer can program. For almost everything else in Hamilton and the Waikato, the locksmith route saves the tow and the wait.
When you need a replacement key there are two realistic routes, and people often assume the dealer is the safer one. It is worth understanding what actually differs, because for most vehicles the work itself is the same.
What the dealer route involves
A franchise dealer orders the key blank, books the vehicle in, and programs it in their workshop. That usually means getting the car there, which for a lost-key situation means a tow.
The part often comes from overseas, so a wait of several days is normal, and workshop labour is charged on top. None of that is unreasonable on their part — it is simply how a workshop operates.
What the mobile route involves
A mobile auto locksmith brings the blank, the cutting machine and the diagnostic programmer to wherever the car is sitting. The key is cut and coded on the spot, tested, and you drive away.

The equipment question
This is the point people miss. We use professional diagnostic tools that talk to your vehicle the same way a dealer tool does, which is why a key we program is not a lesser key — it is the same chip, coded the same way, with the same functions.
A properly cut and coded key locks, unlocks, starts the car and works the boot release exactly as the original did. There is no reduced version of a working key.
When the dealer is the right call
A handful of very new models, and vehicles where the immobiliser has to be replaced rather than programmed. Occasionally a car still under warranty where the fault is electrical rather than a key problem at all.
