Short answer: this was an all-keys-lost job on a 2012 VW Polo GTI. The customer had no working key left, so we made a new flip key and programmed it to the car at their driveway. The car did not need towing or a trip to a dealer.
What the job was
All keys lost means there is no working key to copy, so the car has to be told to accept a brand new one. The photos show the new flip key, where the blade folds into the fob, held up at the back of the car, and the programming equipment set up inside the car while the key was programmed.

The immobiliser has to be programmed to recognise the new key, and any lost keys can be removed from the car so they can no longer start it.
