Why a Spare Car Key Saves You Money

3 min read By Mobile Auto Locksmith Hamilton

The maths on spare keys is straightforward. Here is what a spare costs versus an emergency callout in Hamilton.

Almost every emergency locksmith callout we attend traces back to the same root cause: the vehicle had exactly one key. One key is a single point of failure for a machine you depend on every day.

The two jobs are not the same job

A spare cut and programmed while you still hold a working key is a simple, scheduled job. The locksmith reads from the existing key, cuts a matching blade and programs the new chip in sequence with the original — quick and affordable. That is ordinary spare car keys work.

An all-keys-lost job is a different proposition. It requires extracting key data directly from the immobiliser, generating a code from scratch, and often more complex programming — which is reflected in the price. It is also slower, and on some makes it involves a security delay nobody can shorten.

The difference is not a small premium. It is the single largest price gap in this trade, and it is entirely avoidable while you still have a key that works.

The cost that is not on the invoice

The key is the visible number. The day is usually the bigger one. A car off the road means a missed shift, a rescheduled appointment, children collected by somebody else, or a job not quoted.

That cost falls the same way whether the key was lost at home or in a car park in town, and it is the part people do not price in until it happens.

Fleet and business vehicles

Fleet operators feel this most acutely. A single ute off the road for even half a day costs far more in lost productivity than a spare key programme for the whole fleet. We manage spare key sets for Waikato businesses for exactly this reason, under fleet locksmith services.

Done as a batch, keys are markedly cheaper per vehicle than one at a time in an emergency. It is also the only way to know what you actually hold — most businesses with more than three vehicles cannot say with confidence how many keys exist or who has them.

Where to keep it

Not in the car, and not on the same ring as the original. A spare that travels with the key it is backing up is not a spare.

The arrangements that work are a trusted person who is not you, or somewhere secure at home that someone else can reach. There is more on this in where to keep a spare key.

The short version

If you have one key, the cheapest day to get a second is today, and the price only goes one way once that key is gone.

Distance changes the sum

In Hamilton a lost key costs you an hour or two. Out at Raglan, Matamata or on a farm past Te Awamutu it can cost most of a day once travel is counted both ways.

The further from town you are, the more a spare is worth, which is why rural customers tend to be the ones who already have two.

Tell us the make, model and year and we will price a spare properly. Get a quote — it takes a minute and it is the least dramatic call you will ever make to a locksmith.

Common questions

How much cheaper is a spare than an emergency replacement?

Substantially, on every key type, and the gap is widest on smart keys. A spare is read from your existing key; an all-keys-lost job has to generate the code from the vehicle itself.

Can you make a spare at my home or work?

Yes. We are mobile and come to the vehicle anywhere in Hamilton and the wider Waikato, so a spare is usually done while the car sits on the drive.

Should I get one spare or two?

Two is worth considering if the vehicle is shared or used for work. The second key on the same visit costs much less than a separate visit later.

Does a spare key need programming, or just cutting?

Both, on any vehicle with an immobiliser. A cut blade alone will turn the lock but will not start the engine.
