Ignition barrel replacement sounds straightforward, but there is an important step that many mechanics skip: re-keying the new barrel to match your existing key. If a workshop simply fits a replacement barrel, it comes with its own key — meaning your old keys no longer work the ignition, and your door keys are now different from your ignition key. For vehicles with separate door and ignition locks, that creates an awkward two-key situation.

As auto locksmiths, we re-key the new barrel to match the cut of your existing working key. The barrel is disassembled, the tumblers are arranged to the correct bitting pattern for your key, and the barrel is re-assembled. The result: one key opens everything, just as it did before.

We also confirm the new barrel operates the ignition switch correctly — both the electrical connection for start and the mechanical release of the steering lock — before refitting to the column.

A Te Rapa business owner called us after discovering his Toyota Hilux had been targeted by thieves overnight. The ignition barrel had been drilled out. The Hilux was undriveable and the owner needed it back in service quickly.

We sourced a Toyota Hilux compatible ignition barrel and travelled to the vehicle within 30 minutes. Ignition drilling and bypass attempts are unfortunately common across Hamilton and the wider Waikato. Thieves target vehicles with a known pattern: they drill the barrel to destroy the tumblers, then use a flathead screwdriver to turn the remnants and start the car. Common targets include older Toyota HiAce vans, Toyota Hilux utes, and Nissan Navara models.

If your vehicle has been targeted, the barrel needs replacing before the vehicle is driven — not only because the barrel no longer secures the ignition, but because a damaged barrel can allow the steering lock to re-engage mid-drive in some configurations, which is dangerous.
