Proximity Keys in Hamilton

The key fob continuously transmits a low-power signal. Sensors in the door handles and the start button area listen for this signal. When the fob is within range — usually 1–2 metres — the car recognises it and allows entry or engine start. This is called a passive entry or hands-free system because you never need to press anything on the fob to unlock the door.

Inside the fob there is a transponder chip, a remote control transmitter, and a battery. The transponder chip is what communicates with the immobiliser to authorise engine start — the remote transmitter handles the keyless entry. Both parts need to be correctly programmed to your vehicle for the system to work. If either loses its registration in the car's system, the fob becomes useless even if mechanically intact.

There are several situations where programming is required. The most straightforward is a replacement after a lost or damaged key. If you have bought a second-hand proximity key fob to use as a spare, it will not work until it has been programmed to your specific vehicle — it cannot simply be paired like a Bluetooth device.

Programming is also needed after certain vehicle repairs — if the body control module or ECU has been replaced, the security data may have been reset, and all keys need to be re-registered. Some vehicles also lose key registration after a flat battery or jump-start, though this is less common on modern systems.

If your proximity key has started failing intermittently — sometimes locking the car, sometimes not; sometimes allowing start, sometimes not — it may have lost partial registration, or the signal is being interfered with. We can run a diagnostic check to identify the cause.

We regularly program proximity keys for Toyota vehicles including the Hilux, Corolla, Prius, and Aqua — all of which use Toyota's Smart Entry system. Ford Ranger and Ford Transit with passive entry systems are also common callouts. Mazda CX-5 and Mazda Atenza use a slightly different implementation but are well within our capability.

For Nissan X-Trail and Navara with Intelligent Key systems, we carry the required programming tools. Hyundai i30, Kia Sportage, Subaru Outback, Mitsubishi Triton, and Honda Fit are also regularly handled. European proximity key programming — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Audi — requires a higher level of diagnostic access, which our equipment supports.

We connect our diagnostic programmer to the vehicle's OBD-II port and use it to access the body control module and immobiliser. The new key fob is introduced to the system and its unique identifier is written into the car's authorised key list. For systems that use rolling codes (which most modern proximity systems do), the code synchronisation happens automatically during programming.

The whole process typically takes 30–60 minutes depending on the make and model. After programming, we test every function: passive door unlock when you approach, lock when you walk away (if the vehicle supports auto-lock), push-button start, and all remote functions. We do not leave until everything works correctly.
