A car door that will not lock is two different jobs — one mechanical, one electrical. Which one you have decides who to ring, and you can tell in a minute.

Is it mechanical or electrical?
Try the key in the door lock, and try the remote, and note which fails.
The key turns but nothing happens, or the key will not turn at all — that is mechanical. The lock barrel, the linkage behind it, or the latch. This is locksmith work.
The key works fine but the remote does not lock that one door — that is electrical. Usually the door's lock actuator, a small motor inside the door card, or the wiring in the rubber boot between door and body. That is an auto electrician, not us, and we will tell you so rather than take the callout.

The faults we do fix
A key snapped off in the door lock. More common than people expect on the driver's door, because that is the lock that gets used every day for years. We extract the broken piece without drilling the barrel, and where the key was already worn we cut a fresh one from the vehicle rather than copying a damaged blade. That is our broken key extraction work.
A worn or seizing lock barrel. Years of grit and weather wear the wafers inside until the key will only turn if you jiggle it, then one day it will not turn at all. It is the same wear pattern we deal with constantly on ignitions, where the barrel is stripped, the worn tumblers replaced, and the barrel re-keyed to your existing key so you are not left carrying a second key. Door barrels work on the same principle — ring and describe what the key is doing and we will tell you straight whether it is a repair or a replacement barrel.
A key that turns freely without unlocking anything. The barrel is turning but the linkage behind it has come adrift. That is mechanical rather than electrical, which is worth saying precisely when you ring, because it decides which trade you need.
What it costs, and why nobody can quote it blind
A lock barrel repair and a broken key extraction are different jobs at different prices, and both depend on how the vehicle is built. Some cars give you access behind the door card in minutes; others need trim removed carefully first, and a careless job there breaks clips that then rattle for the rest of the car's life.
What we will not do is quote a number down the phone and change it on arrival. Tell us the make, model and year, and what exactly fails, and you will get a firm figure before we set off.
Do not force it
The single most expensive mistake with a stiff door lock is forcing the key. A key that needs pressure to turn is already telling you the barrel is worn, and the moment it snaps you have added an extraction to what was a clean repair.
Same with spraying lubricant into the lock. WD-40 washes out the grease the wafers need and picks up grit, so it frees the lock for a fortnight and leaves it worse. A locksmith uses a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant for exactly this reason.

Common questions
Can a locksmith repair a car door lock?
The mechanical side, yes — worn or seized lock barrels, keys snapped off in the door, and barrels that turn without unlocking anything. What a locksmith does not do is the electrical side: if the key works but the remote will not lock one particular door, that is usually the lock actuator inside the door card and it is a job for an auto electrician.

The barrel is working and the linkage behind it has come adrift or broken. It feels alarming because the key spins freely, but it is a mechanical fault and it is repairable at the vehicle. Worth having looked at promptly, because the same linkage usually operates the interior handle.
Should I spray WD-40 into a stiff car door lock?
No. It frees the lock briefly then makes it worse, because it washes out the grease the wafers rely on and then attracts grit. Use a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant made for locks.
