What Key Cutting Costs in NZ
Why one key cut costs a few dollars and another a few hundred — what really sets key cutting prices in New Zealand, and which one you are dealing with.
"How much to get a key cut?" is a reasonable question with an unreasonable answer: the same six words cover jobs that differ by a factor of fifty. If you already know what you need, key cutting in Hamilton has the current prices.

Here is what actually sets key cutting prices in New Zealand, so you can work out roughly which bracket you are in before you ring anybody.
What key cutting costs, roughly
Plain metal keys are $10–$20. Transponder keys with an immobiliser chip are $120–$180. Smart and proximity keys are $280–$600, depending on the make, model and year. If every key is lost, it is $250–$550, because every vehicle is different.
Those are starting points rather than flat rates. Where your car sits inside them comes down to the make, model and year, which is what the rest of this explains.
The three brackets
A plain metal key — house keys, padlock keys, older car keys with no electronics. This is the cheapest thing anyone cuts. It is a blank and a machine, and the price reflects that. If someone quotes you a lot for this, something is wrong.
A transponder key — a metal blade with a chip in the head. The cutting is the same work as above; the cost is in the programming, because the chip has to be paired to your car's immobiliser before the engine will start. This is where most car key cutting sits.
A proximity or smart key — the sort you leave in your pocket. The blank itself is expensive before anyone touches it, and pairing it to the vehicle takes longer. This is the top bracket, and no amount of shopping around changes that the hardware costs what it costs.
What moves the price inside a bracket
Whether you still hold a working key. This is the single biggest factor, bigger than the make of car. Cutting a spare from an existing key is quick. Generating a key when every one is lost means reading the immobiliser directly, and on some makes waiting out a security delay nobody can shorten.
The make. Not for prestige reasons — some manufacturers simply use systems that take longer to work with. A common Japanese model and a recent European one are genuinely different amounts of work. There is more on that in what car keys cost by brand.
Where it happens. A mobile locksmith comes to the vehicle, which saves you a tow but means travel is part of the job. For us that is Hamilton and the wider Waikato, and the price we quote covers the whole job.
What does not move the price
The age of the car on its own. A fifteen-year-old vehicle with an awkward immobiliser can cost more than something recent and common.
The time of day, within our hours. We work 8am to 6pm, seven days, and price the job rather than the hour.
How urgently you need it. A key cut in a hurry costs the same as one cut on a Tuesday afternoon.
Why nobody publishes a single number
Any locksmith quoting one price for "key cutting" is either only cutting plain metal keys, or they are going to revise the figure when they see your car. Neither is what you want.
What you should get instead is a fixed price for *your* vehicle, before anyone travels. Tell us the make, model and year and you get a firm number on the phone — and if it turns out to be a different key type than expected, we say so before starting and you decide.

How much does it cost to get a key cut in New Zealand?

Why is a car key so much dearer than a house key?
Because cutting is only half of it. A car key from the late 1990s onward carries a transponder chip that has to be paired to your immobiliser, and a smart key is a small radio computer before anyone programs anything.
Is key cutting cheaper if I still have one working key?
Considerably, and it is the largest single saving available on this job. With a working key we can read from it. With none, the key has to be generated from the vehicle, which takes longer and needs more equipment.
