Transponder Keys vs Smart Keys Explained
Chip keys, flip keys, proximity fobs — a plain-English explanation of modern car key types and what each actually costs to replace.
Car keys stopped being simple metal a long time ago, and the words used for the different types get muddled constantly. Here is what each one actually is, how to tell which you have, and what that means when you need another.
Transponder or chip keys
A transponder key carries a small microchip in the plastic head. Turn the key and the car reads the chip; if the code matches, the immobiliser releases and the engine starts. Cutting the blade alone is never enough — the chip must be programmed specifically to your vehicle.
This is the most common key on Waikato roads, covering most vehicles from the late 1990s to the mid 2010s. If you physically insert a key and turn it to start, this is almost certainly what you have. Replacing one is transponder key programming.
Smart or proximity keys
A smart or proximity key never leaves your pocket. The car detects it within a metre or so, unlocks on touch and starts with a button press. These are more expensive to replace because the fob itself is a complex radio device that must be paired with encrypted security data unique to your vehicle.
Most also hide a small emergency blade inside, which is what lets you into the car if the fob battery dies. It should always be cut when a smart key is supplied — a smart key without a cut blade is only half a key. The work sits under smart key replacement.
Flip and switchblade remotes
Flip and switchblade remotes sit in between: a chipped blade with a built-in remote, hinged to fold away neatly. Functionally they are a transponder key with the remote buttons built into the same body.
When the hinge wears out, the fob can often be rebuilt rather than fully replaced — saving real money. A flip key that has gone floppy or where the blade no longer locks open is usually a repair rather than a replacement, and key fob repair covers it.
Telling them apart in ten seconds
Do you put the key into a slot and turn it? Transponder. Does the car start from a button while the key stays in your pocket? Smart key. Does the blade fold into the body at the press of a button? Flip key, which is a transponder underneath.
Buttons on the key mean nothing on their own. Plenty of ordinary chip keys have lock and unlock buttons built into the head, and that remote is a separate system from the immobiliser chip sitting next to it.
The one rule that applies to all of them
Whatever type of key you carry, one truth holds: a spare cut while you still have a working key costs a fraction of what an emergency all-keys-lost replacement will set you back later. The gap is widest on smart keys and narrowest on plain chip keys, but it exists on every type.
What is common on Waikato roads
Transponder keys still dominate here, because so many vehicles on the road are Japanese models from the 2000s and early 2010s, including a large number of imports.

Common questions
Can a locksmith program a transponder key, or only a dealer?
We program them daily, at the vehicle, using the same immobiliser data the dealer works from. For most makes there is no need to involve a dealer at all.
Is a smart key worth repairing rather than replacing?
Often yes. Dead batteries, worn buttons and cracked cases are all repairable, and a rebuild costs far less than a new fob paired to the car.
Why does cutting the blade not make the car start?
Because the blade only turns the lock. The immobiliser is looking for the chip's code, and without programming the engine will crank or refuse to start even though the key fits.
Do flip keys cost more than ordinary chip keys?
A little, because of the remote and the hinge mechanism, but far less than a proximity smart key. They also repair well, which keeps the long-run cost down.
