Land Rover has run two quite different security systems across the modern Discovery range. Pre-2015 vehicles use the older Jaguar Land Rover immobiliser. From 2015 onward, the Discovery moved to KVM — the Keyless Vehicle Module — which is a different system entirely and is worked on at the module itself rather than purely through a straightforward OBD write.

That distinction matters most on an all-keys-lost job. A spare key cut from a working original is usually a same-visit job on either system. All-keys-lost on a KVM-equipped Discovery is a considerably longer piece of work than a spare key, because there is no key left to authenticate against and the module has to be dealt with directly. We will tell you which system your Discovery uses, and roughly how long the job will take, before we come out — not after.

We can also delete a lost, stolen or unreturned key from the system at the same visit, so it can never be used to start the vehicle again.

Smart key battery failure is the most common call on the newer KVM-equipped Discovery — intermittent proximity detection or a push-button start that works once and not the next. We carry the right battery and re-pair the fob on site.

All-keys-lost callouts happen more often than owners expect on a vehicle this size, usually when a single key has been relied on for years and finally goes missing or fails. We confirm which system is fitted and what the job involves before travelling.

A Discovery running on one key is a common planned-spare job for us — far less stressful, and usually less expensive, than an emergency callout later.
