Locked Out of Your House in Hamilton?
House lockouts do not have to end with a drilled cylinder and a new lock. What a locksmith actually does, and what to avoid trying yourself.
Being locked out of the house tends to happen at the least convenient moment — arriving home in the dark, or stepping outside for thirty seconds as the door closes behind you. The instinct is to start forcing something, and that is usually where the cost comes from.
Check the free options
Try every exterior door, including the garage and any internal door between the garage and the house. Check whether a window was left on a latch. Ring whoever else holds a key before assuming nobody can help.
If you have a garage with a remote in the car, that is worth remembering — plenty of Hamilton houses are reachable that way, and the internal door between garage and house is often the one nobody bothers locking.
What not to do
Credit cards, screwdrivers and anything prised into the door frame. A card can occasionally slip a simple latch, but on a modern door it damages the seal and the frame while the deadbolt stays locked.
Forcing a UPVC door bends the mechanism inside, and that is a considerably bigger repair than the lockout. The multipoint strip running the height of the door is not a cheap part, and once it is distorted the door never quite closes properly again.
Breaking a small window looks like the economical option and rarely is, once the glass and the callout to secure it are added up.
Opening does not mean destroying the lock
A cylinder can often be picked or manipulated open and left fully working, so you pay for the callout and nothing else. Drilling is a last resort for locks that cannot be opened another way, not a first move — our emergency lockout page explains the approach.
It is worth asking any locksmith you ring whether they intend to open the lock or drill it, and what happens to the price either way. The answer tells you a lot.
If the keys are gone rather than inside
Where a lock does have to be replaced, or where you have lost the keys entirely and want the house secure, re-keying the existing hardware is usually cheaper than fitting new. That comes under residential locksmith work.
If several doors currently take different keys, this is a sensible moment to have them keyed alike so one key runs the house.

How do I prove I live there?
A driver licence showing the address, a tenancy agreement, or recent mail in your name at that address. If you have none of those on you, tell us when you call and we will talk through the options.
Can you get in if the key snapped in the lock?
Yes. The broken piece is extracted and, in most cases, a new key cut to the same lock so you are not paying for replacement hardware.
