Earlier Carnival vans (VQ, sold in NZ through to around 2014) use a conventional transponder key with a separate remote fob — a straightforward, affordable system to replace or reprogram.

The YP generation (2014–2020) carried a similar transponder-remote setup on most NZ trims, with higher-spec models adding smart key functionality later in the run.

The current KA4 Carnival (2021–present) uses a smart key system across NZ variants, with proximity entry and push-to-start standard. All generations are programmed through the vehicle's OBD port, and all-keys-lost recovery reads the security data directly from the van's immobiliser — no original key required.

All keys lost: Easily the most disruptive Carnival callout — a family van or shuttle vehicle that simply cannot move. We prioritise these jobs and generate a new key on site without towing.

Smart key not detecting (KA4): Usually a flat CR2032 fob battery, sometimes needing a re-pair after replacement. We carry correct batteries and sort both in one visit.

Spare key for shared or multi-driver use: Many Carnival households and operators run the van between several drivers on a single key — a cut and programmed spare removes the single point of failure.

Remote de-sync after a battery change: A known issue after the 12V battery is disconnected for servicing, especially on vans that sit for stretches between school terms. Re-paired via OBD on site.

A Hillcrest family of six called us on a Monday morning — the only smart key to their KA4 Carnival had gone missing over the weekend, and school drop-off plus a medical appointment were both riding on it.

We arrived within 30 minutes. Using OBD access to the Carnival's BCM, we read the immobiliser security data, generated and programmed a new smart key, and deleted the lost key's code from the system so it could never be used to start the van.

Total time on site: 55 minutes. The family made their appointment with time to spare, and the lost key was permanently locked out.
