Honda HR-V / Vezel Locksmith Hamilton

The HR-V name covers two distinct things in New Zealand: the original NZ-new HR-V, and the much larger population of used-import Vezels that share the same platform and electronics. Older examples from the early-to-mid 2010s typically run a straightforward transponder key, usually with a separate remote for central locking — reliable, affordable to replace, and one of our more routine Honda jobs. From the mid-2010s onward, higher grades of both the HR-V and Vezel moved to a smart/proximity key with push-button start, and this became standard across most grades through the rest of the decade and into the early 2020s.

Whichever generation you drive, the process is the same on our end: we read what the vehicle needs, program a key or fob to match it via the OBD port, and test the full lock, unlock and start cycle before we leave. If a key has gone missing rather than just stopped working, we can also generate a brand new key directly from the vehicle — no original key needed — and remove the lost one from the system so it can no longer start the car.

Single working key: A very common situation on used-import Vezels that arrived in NZ with only one key, or HR-Vs that lost their spare years ago. We cut and program a second key from the working original while you still have it — far cheaper than an emergency callout later.

Smart key fob battery flat: On push-button-start models, a dying coin-cell battery causes the car to stop detecting the key reliably — starting works one attempt and not the next. We carry the right battery and re-pair the fob on site if needed.

All keys lost: Keys go missing at the supermarket, on school pickup, round the back of the couch and never found. We attend these across Hamilton and generate a new key directly from the vehicle.

Locked out with the key inside: A common one with young families juggling kids and groceries. Non-destructive entry in most cases, usually well under 15 minutes.

A Rototuna owner called us after her Vezel's only key — inherited with the car when she bought it used — stopped turning the ignition reliably. She had no spare and couldn't risk being stranded with young kids in the car.

We arrived within 35 minutes, confirmed the immobiliser was reading the existing key correctly, and cut and programmed a second smart key from the working original so she now had a genuine spare. We also tested the worn original and advised she keep using the new key as her primary.

Total time on site: 40 minutes. Two working keys by the end of the visit, and she no longer has to worry about being locked out with no backup.
